KUCHING: A viral Facebook posting warning about a man allegedly extorting motorists by faking traffic accidents has resulted in him being arrested by police.

Acting on the posting, which had been shared by local citizens on the social networking site as well as through Whatsapp for the past three days, police detained the heavily-tattooed suspect in Bintawa around 8pm on Monday and seized his maroon-coloured Perodua Kenari.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad, who confirmed the case, revealed that the suspect is a 26-year-old jobless man who tested positive for amphetamine during a urine test conducted by police.

“A check of his Perodua Kenari found that it did not have any road tax and had several scratches on its body.

“On the allegation made against him on Facebook, the suspect claimed his vehicle was indeed hit by another motorist and admitted that he did ask for monetary compensation, but denied committing extortion or issuing threats,” said Roslan.

Following his arrest, the suspect was detained in the lockup under Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and will be charged in court under Section 9(3) of the Poisons Act 1952 for a separate case which he was previously arrested for.

The Facebook posting, which included the suspect’s photo, spawned numerous comments from other users who alleged the suspect had pulled similar schemes on other motorists by first claiming they had hit his car before demanding for monetary compensation.

Other Facebook users also claimed he had previously barged into shops in Mile 3 and Hui Sing and demanded for money from terrified female employees.
