Azmin: No water rationing during current hot spell
TANJONG KARANG: The people of Selangor have been assured that no water rationing will be implemented during the current hot and dry weather.
Mentri Besar Azmin Ali said the State Economic Action Council next Thursday, however, would discuss alternative measures that needed to be taken to avoid water rationing.
“I want all preparations to be done earlier to face the possibility of water shortage in dams which will affect the supply of raw water to treatment plants, as well as the supply of clean water to consumers in the state.
“I don’t want water rationing to be implemented like last year. So, I will look into all factors, including tighter enforcement at rivers to prevent pollution that will only cause water treatment plants to be closed,” he told reporters here.

IT’S THE RAINY SEASON BUT YOUR TAPS MAY STILL RUN DRY!
The problem is not the supply of rainwater now filling up the state’s main dam at Sungai Selangor – now over 45% after falling close to the critical 30% in September.
It is the limited capacity of treatment plants to meet the demand for treated water.
The situation has resulted in a worryingly thin reserve margin of treated water that Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) has to rely on should there be instances of raw water pollution, pump house failure, electrical failure, disruption caused by a third party or a sudden long dry spell.

Selangorians to suffer water disruption yet again, due to diesel spill
By NURADILLA NOORAZAM and Rahmat Khairulrijal – 12 October 2014 @ 2:13 PM
SHAH ALAM: The unexpected water disruption at several locations in Selangor is expected to resume to normal by 8am tomorrow after four water treatment plants that supply more than 60 per cent of treated water supply to the state were forced to close for 12 hours.
Due to the closure, supply of treated water Gombak, Klang/Shah Alam, Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor deteriorated as much as 1,350 million litre causing some areas to be cut off from water supply completely.
Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) general manager Priscilla Alfred said that some areas might experience longer water shortage, for as long as three days, as the current reserve supply and alternative source of water are insufficient.
“To help ease the burden of consumers, water tanks will be supplied from time to time at areas affected by the incident.
“However, the current number of water tanks are not sufficient to be disposed to all locations at the same time so priorities will be given to highly-critical areas such as hospitals, dialysis centers and others. Consumers are advised to be cautious with water usage and only use when necessary,” she said.
The four affected water treatment plants in Sungai Selangor phase 1 and 3, managed by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) and Sungai Selangor phase 2 and Rantau Panjang treatment plants under Puncak Niaga (M) Sdn Bhd.
It was revealed that the cause of the matter was the pollution of hydrolic liquid found in the water that was discovered late night yesterday.

ARE YOU REALLY COMFORTED BY THE SIGHT OF THIS MINING POOL DRYING UP?
Selangor exco member Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi reassures you, residents of the Klang Valley, that this mining pool will supply enough water for 3 more weeks.
After that, there will be 9 more. But would those nine pools supply enough water till the rainy season comes?

Mining pool drying up fast
Two of the pipes used to pump water from the former mining pool in Kampung Hang Tuah to Sungai Selangor. The pipes used to be underwater but are now exposed as the water level recedes.
However, when StarMetro visited the site recently, it looked like there was no more water in the pond and the underwater pumps could be seen clearly.
Dried earth surrounded the area, indicating that the water used to be quite a high level.
Excavators could also be seen operating in the area while lorries carried sand out.

‘We don’t have enough raw water’
PETALING JAYA: A second water rationing exercise for Selangor has become necessary as the state government cannot rely on the usual intermonsoon rainfall expected in September, said the Association of Water and Energy Research Malaysia (Awer).
President S. Piarapakaran described the state government’s meeting today to decide on whether water rationing should be implemented for the second time this year as better late than never.
“It is a pretty straightforward situation.
“We clearly do not have enough raw water to supply to the four major treatment plants that produce water for about 60% of consumers in the state.

PETALING JAYA, Aug 1 — An impending water crisis is awaiting more than 60 per cent of the population in the Klang Valley if nothing is done to address the depleting water level at the Sungai Selangor dam.
Klang DAP MP Charles Santiago said water supply could be disrupted in the next two weeks as many return to the city from their hometowns after Hari Raya celebrations.
“If there is no rain at the water catchment areas in the next two weeks, we are going to be staring at the mother of all rationing,” he said.
…
Advising the state government not to sit on its laurels, Santiago said it was high time the state authorities swing into an emergency mode and enforce a no hose policy immediately.
“They should ban all car washing exercise and bottling of water. Priority must be given to water for consumption,” he said.

‘S’gor already in emergency, Khalid playing stupid’

DAP’s Klang MP Charles Santiago today warned that Selangor’s water crisis has deteriorated to an emergency level, and charged that Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was “playing stupid” over the situation.
“Khalid is refusing to impose water rationing as it will reflect badly on him.
“But he needs to stop playing stupid and ignoring the growing water emergency for his political survival,” he told a press conference in Klang this morning.
Charles said if a combination of water rationing and conservation efforts do not start immediately, the state will not have any water left to ration.

‘Gangsters sabotaging water pumping in S’gor’
The Selangor state government today claimed that its attempt to pump water into the river at Bestari Jaya to ensure continuous water supply for the Hari Raya period is being “sabotaged” by some parties.
The state executive councillor for Youth, Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said in a statement today some officers were threatened from pumping water by a group of gangsters “with weapons”.
“Due to fears for their safety, the team had to leave the scene,” he said, disclosing that the incident took place at 3am today.
Because of this, he said the pumping of water was delayed by five hours.
“A police report has been lodged at the Bestari Jaya police station,” he added.

Selangor and KL folks have been promised water during Hari Raya but with the water level at all 7 dams falling to a new low, you should expect rationing to return after Raya.

Water level at dam drops to new low

SHAH ALAM: The water capacity at the Sungai Selangor dam has dropped to a new low and is dipping to the critical level. The state government, however, is remaining adamant about not calling for another rationing exercise.
State exco man in charge of infrastructure and public amenities Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi is insisting that there is enough water in disused ponds in Bestari Jaya to keep the state’s water supply going.
He said the measures taken were good enough to ensure continuous supply during the festive season.
“Although water levels at all seven dams in the state dipped between 0.8% and 3% from July 18 to Thursday, the state currently has 24 pumps that are operating all the time while another four more pumps are yet to be installed,” he said, adding that this step would ensure continuous water supply before and after the Raya holidays.

Hot and dry days for next two months
PETALING JAYA: There will be hot and dry days over the next two months, with limited rainfall across the country till September.
The meteorological department says the isolated rainfall in certain parts of the country now was no indication of milder weather to come.
A department spokesman said the hot dry spell was due to the south-west monsoon winds which began in the middle of May, indicating drier weather than normal with less rainfall and cloud formation.
“We expect the hot and dry weather to continue with limited isolated rain across the country,” he said.
