Riding the MRT to a galaxy far, far away http://str.sg/ZzCG #StarWarsForceAwakens

…
They may not travel at light speed, but commuters can now ride to an MRT station far, far away as Star Wars fever comes to Singapore’s trains.
From now until Dec 31, carriages on two SMRT trains on the North-South and East-West lines will feature movie character designs from the new movie, The Force Awakens. SMRT buses plying central routes will also feature the likes of Darth Vader and C-3PO on their exterior.
A retail store opened by SMRT Commercial in Raffles Place MRT Station yesterday called Pop In will sell take-away snacks as well as licensed merchandise from upcoming movies and games.

3 October 2015
When my wife and I took the MRT in Singapore last Saturday, 26 September, there was no double-Q system but it wasn’t rush hour, so it was orderly and not crowded.
Being 65, I took a seat under a picture of an old man with a walking stick. I don’t use a walking stick (yet). Son joked, “Hope you don’t get on video.” I thought about it and said to myself that I would smile for them. 🙂

New double-queue system being piloted at three MRT stations to improve commuter flow
If you take the train at Bishan, Buona Vista or Jurong East MRT stations, you might have noticed new queue markings to help commuters board the trains.
This is part of a new queue system that is being piloted at the three busy stations, to improve the flow of commuters boarding and alighting from trains during rush hour.
The three-month trial by operator SMRT started last month, The Straits Times has learnt. Red arrows and lanes are used to line commuters up in two rows at each side of the train door, while staying clear of alighting passengers.
Existing markings at most station platforms are not so detailed, employing a funnel shape to get people to keep away from the train doors.
The three stations, which are all interchanges, were chosen because of their high passenger volume during the peak hours.

SINGAPORE: Two Germans were charged in court on Saturday morning (Nov 22) for their involvement in a case of vandalism of an SMRT train at Bishan Depot on Nov 8, 2014.
Andreas Von Knorre and Elton Hinz, both aged 21, face two charges each, for entering the depot without authorisation, and committing the act of vandalism “to wit”. The two men were also charged with using spray paint to paint graffiti on the left exterior cabin of an SMRT train at the depot.

Germans may face caning in Singapore if convicted of train graffiti
SINGAPORE – Two Germans have been arrested in Malaysia and extradited to Singapore where they are suspected of spray-painting graffiti on a train, an offence that can carry the penalty of a jail term and caning.
Police said on Friday that the two men, both aged 21, were arrested late on Thursday. They were about to leave Kuala Lumpur for Australia.
…
UPDATE: Men arrested for allegedly vandalising #SMRT train will be charged in court tomorrow http://cna.asia/1vuVf3t
SINGAPORE: Police have arrested two 21-year-old men, who are believed to be involved in the recent case where an SMRT train at Bishan Depot was reported to be vandalised. The men are believed to be German nationals.
Both men were detained at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at about 6pm on Thursday (Nov 20) as they were preparing to board a plane to Australia, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said on Friday.
Mobile phones, laptops, cameras, and three spray nozzles were found on the men when they were arrested, police said.
…
The suspects entered Singapore on Nov 4 and left on Nov 8, according to police. Before being arrested in Kuala Lumpur, both men had travelled to countries in the region, including Bangkok. The Royal Malaysia Police and Royal Thai Police assisted in the arrest.
Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SAC) Tan Chye Hee said: “SPF would like to extend our appreciation to the Royal Malaysia Police and Royal Thai Police for their invaluable assistance and strong support leading to the swift arrest of the two suspects.”
“The suspects had displayed a blatant disregard of the law in Singapore. Police do not tolerate such brazen criminal acts and we will spare no effort to hunt down those who commit these crimes, be they locals or foreigners, and bring them to justice,” SAC Tan said.
The suspects will be charged on Saturday for vandalism and for trespassing into a protected place.

4 men race against MRT train in relay from Little India to Farrer Park station http://shar.es/1Xfwp8
SINGAPORE – 4 men filmed themselves outrunning an MRT train in a relay from Little India to Farrer Park station along the North East Line on Oct 14.
A video of the challenge was uploaded onto YouTube on Nov 13.
According to the clip, the men had to be faster than 2mins 3secs to catch the train at its next stop, Farrer Park station, from Little India station.
Each of their runs was filmed with a GoPro camera strapped on to their heads. Another recording showing the train journey was taking place simultaneously.
The fourth runner managed to board the train at Farrer Park station in time.

LOOK AT WHAT THEY’VE DONE TO THE TRAIN!
Latest SMRT train vandalism ‘most likely inside job’ http://goo.gl/7UbyBI
SMRT has yet to arrive at a firm conclusion on its latest vandalism case, but an early assessment suggests that disgruntled workers or vendors could be behind it.
It also appears that the vandals had more time to do their mischief at Bishan Depot than in May, when another train was targeted.
A photo of the vandalised train obtained by The Straits Times showed graffiti that was more elaborate this time around, although the graffiti in May’s case also stretched across two sets of train doors.
…
The latest two incidents took place despite SMRT having raised security by installing motion sensors along its perimeter fencing, more cameras and more lights, and deploying guards from third-party vendors.

Between April and September this year, Shafiul admitted to molesting three women after being arrested for these three cases, he was released on bail and during that time, he molested a fourth victim.

THE SIGHTS FROM THE MRT AS YOU LOOK OUT THE WINDOWS…
Sin Chew Daily reported that a man was seen easing himself in an open field near the Jurong West MRT station in Singapore at about 5pm on Friday.
The man pulled down his pants and answered the call of nature in the field several times, oblivious to passers-by.
A 13-year-old student known only as Sivasa said he and his friends saw the man.
“He bared his buttocks, squatted and stood up several times. He did not seem to be bothered by the surroundings,” said Sivasa, adding that they also saw some used tissue paper.
Pictures of the man easing himself were uploaded onto a website.

Delays on East-West MRT line due to train brake fault
SINGAPORE — A train with a brake fault at Buona Vista MRT station caused trains heading towards Joo Koon to travel at slower speeds this evening (July 14).
Passengers on the affected train were asked to disembark and board the next train, said Mr Patrick Nathan, Vice-President of SMRT’s Corporate Information and Communications.
Mr Felix Wong, who was a passenger on the affected train, said passengers were asked to alight at about 6.15pm, after staying on the stationary train for about five minutes.
“Passengers were left to stand on the platform without any notice or assistance on alternate modes of transport,” he said, adding that announcements about the delay first stated it would last about 20 minutes, before revising this to 60 minutes. “There seems to be a lack of contingency planning, and the staff (are) unprepared to assist passengers when issues arise.”
