MERSING, Oct 29 — A man linked to the murder of Estonian model Regina Soosalu three years ago, died today when the vehicle he was travelling in crashed into a bus stop here.
According to The Star Online, 31-year-old Tengku Alang Reza Tengku Ibrahim who was recently charged with drug offences in Selangor, was sitting in the back of a Toyota Hilux with three women during the 6.34pm incident on Friday.
“Initial investigations showed that the group was heading to Johor Baru from Mersing when the driver lost control at KM15 of Jalan Jemaluang-Mersing,” the local news portal quoted Mersing OCPD Deputy Supt Cyril Edward Nuing as saying.
“The four-wheel drive crashed into a bus waiting area near Institut Latihan Perindustrian and Tengku Alang died on impact,” he said in a statement.
The driver, identified as Salma @ Noraini Adam, 37, was pronounced dead at the Mersing Hospital.

Suspect in drug case not royal, Johor Palace says
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — The Johor Council of Royal Court has dismissed reports that a suspect charged with drug offences is a member of the state’s royal family.
Council president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli said the suspect was not part of the Johor Royal Family list, a power vested in the sovereign as provided for under Article 7 (2) (e) of the Second Part of the Johor State Constitution of 1895.
“The suspect was never included in the royalty list. A royal decree of 1922 categorically excludes persons not appointed by the Sovereign under the said Article from being recognised as royalty,” he said.
Bernama reported on Thursday that a purported member of the Johor royal family was charged in a magistrate’s court in Petaling Jaya on the same day with three counts of taking methamphetamine and possessing methamphetamine and ganja in June.
Tunku Alang Reza Tunku Ibrahim, 31, pleaded not guilty to the charges. His friend, Puteri Nur Zawani Mohd Rasid, 33, also pleaded not guilty.

PETALING JAYA, Sept 21 — A member of the Johor royal family was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with three counts of taking methamphetamine and possessing similar drugs and ganja last June.
Tunku Alang Reza Tunku Ibrahim, 31, pleaded not guilty to the charges read out before Magistrate Nurulhuda Zakariya.

Meanwhile, Tunku Alang Reza’s friend Puteri Nur Zawani Mohd Rasid, 33, also pleaded not guilty to two counts of possessing ganja and methamphetamine at the same place, time and date.
The court allowed Tunku Alang Reza bail of RM4,500 in one surety and Puteri Nur Zawani bail of RM3,000 and fixed Oct 31 for re-mention.

No cover-up in model murder case, say police
Freelance Estonian model Regina Soosalu, known to have links to a member of a royal family, has been found murdered in Pulau Rawa, off Mersing, Johor.
JOHOR BARU – Police have rubbished talk of a cover-up involving the royalty-linked murder case of Estonian model Regina Soosalu.
Bukit Aman CID chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the claims were unfounded, stressing that police investigations had always been transparent.
“Such allegations are total rubbish, as the department would not cover up (for) those who are involved in crime,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Comm Mohmad declined to comment on the current status of the case.
The murder allegedly took place at Pulau Rawa off Mersing on July 1.

The Johor state police are recompiling the investigation papers (IP) of murdered Estonian model Regina Soosalu, 30, who was found killed at Rawa Island, Mersing last month.
State police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the investigation papers presented by his team before this were returned by the Attorney-General’s office, which asked for the report to be streamlined based on the evidence obtained, Utusan Malaysia reported today.
According to the report, it was believed that the police are waiting for acid test results and toxicology reports in order to complete the investigation papers before handing them back to the Attorney-General’s office.

All seven suspects in Estonian model case out on bail
JOHOR BARU: All seven suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Estonian freelance model Regina Soosalu on July 1 have been released on police bail.
Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said that they were released under Section 388 of the Criminal Procedure Code with one surety each.
“The police have also forwarded our investigation papers to the Public Prosecution unit for further action,” he said in a brief statement.
Datuk Hasnan, when contacted, also confirmed that Soosalu’s body was released to her family two days ago.

Boyfriend’s family offers to pay for Estonian model’s funeral

PETALING JAYA, July 22 — The family of freelance Estonian model Regina Soosalu does not want fundraising for her funeral after her boyfriend’s family agreed to bear all expenses.
The model’s brother, Silver, said Tunku Alang Reza Tunku Ibrahim’s family would make all arrangements, including flying her remains back to Estonia.
Silver told Malay Mail yesterday: “Yes, Alang’s family is helping us, we don’t need the donation now.”

However, Soosalu’s boyfriend, three of his friends and a couple are still under police custody.
Their remand order is supposed to end yesterday. However, it cannot be confirmed if they have been released as efforts to contact Johor CID chief SAC Datuk Hashnan Hassan were unsuccessful.
Earlier, Hashnan said police were still waiting for the toxicology report to determine if Soosalu was under the influence of drugs before her death.

Friends of model raising funds to help send her remains back to Estonia
PETALING JAYA: Friends of Estonian model Regina Soosalu are raising funds to help her family send her remains back to her homeland.
Regina’s friends who have set up a Facebook page named “In Loving Memory of Regina Soosalu 7/Dec/1984-1/Jul/2014” said the money would also be used to hold a memorial here for her friends and family in Kuala Lumpur.
“We are looking into starting a fundraiser for her family in Estonia and are discussing this with the family,” wrote the page administrator to The Star.
In addition, they are also looking at the possibility of getting a lawyer to hold a watching brief for Soosalu’s family.
Estonian honorary consul to Malaysia Col (rtd) Datuk Harbans Singh said he had advised the family to come to Malaysia and have her body cremated due to the high cost in sending it back.
He said one foreign airline had quoted a staggering RM120,000 to take her body home.

The two who had their statements recorded and released on July 8, Johor police contingent said in a statement today.

‘Regina sounded happy to be on island’
Nothing suspicious: Regina was happy to be on a short holiday trip to Pulau Rawa, says a relative.
JOHOR BARU: Estonian model Regina Soosalu, whose body was found along a beach in Pulau Rawa on July 1, was happy to holiday on the island, her family said.
A relative said the last time they spoke to her was over the phone on June 27.
“Regina spoke to her mother and she sounded happy that day.
“She told us about her trip to Pulau Rawa and said she was happy to go there for a short holiday,” a close relative from Estonia, who declined to give his name, said when contacted via e-mail, yesterday.

Murdered Estonian model’s friend suspects she was heavy drug user, says report

Murdered Estonian model Regina Soosalu was suspected to have been a heavy drug user before she died in Pulau Rawa, a close friend of Soosalu told The Star.
“I believe that she often got intoxicated and took party drugs for fun. This could have turned into addiction,” the friend was quoted as saying.
The friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Soosalu had appeared to have lost weight, an indication of heavy drug use, and suggested this was why the model had spent a lot of time on Pulau Rawa.
“I was worried for her but she was there with her boyfriend, so I thought she would be okay,” she told The Star.

The police have yet to decide what further action to take, although they are currently questioning the seven people detained in the case.
“We will have to wait for all the lab test results and then decide on further action. We are also investigating if they (the suspects) tested positive for drugs,” Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan told The Star.

Police are now investigating whether an Estonian model romantically linked to a member of the Johor royalty could have been murdered.
Regina Soosalu was initially thought to have drowned.
According to a report in The Star today, her body was discovered on a beach in Pulau Rawa.
Soosalu had arrived at a resort there just hours earlier from Kuala Lumpur, where the freelance model is based.
