Negara-Ku a coalition, does not need to be registered, says Ambiga
Negara-ku is a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGO), which does not require it to be registered under the Societies Act, its patron Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said today.
“We don’t believe there is a need to register ourselves because we are a coalition of societies.”
She was responding to the Home Ministry’s announcement today that Negara-Ku is illegal as the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had not received any application from the group to register it as a body.
It warned the group that it would be breaking the law if it continued to carry out activities without being registered.
It added that if the group intends to register, its name was not appropriate as it belonged to Malaysia and could confuse Malaysians.

EXPECT NEGARA-KU TO CHALLENGE ZAHID’S RULING IN COURT.
What law prohibits use of ‘Negara-Ku’? Ambiga asks Home Ministry
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — There is no legal impediment to the use of “Negara-Ku” to name a group, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said today, as she flayed Putrajaya for declaring the newly formed citizen movement an illegal society.
The prominent civil rights lawyer and activist urged Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to state which provision under the law prohibits the use of the word, which is similar to “Negaraku”, Malaysia’s national anthem.
“We do not see any legal impediment to using the name and KDN should perhaps inform us under what provisions of the law they are making these allegations,” she said in a text message to the Malay Mail Online.
KDN is the Malay acronym for the Home Ministry.

Zahid will not allow Negara-Ku to register
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today declared that his ministry will not allow anti-racism NGO Negara-Ku to register as an organisation under its current name.
Ahmad Zahid said the movement led by former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan and national laureate A Samad Said has yet to apply for registration with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
“Even if it were to apply for registration with the Registrar of Societies (ROS), the name Negara-Ku is not suitable because it belongs to Malaysia.
“Negara-Ku refers to the song Negaraku which is recognised as the national anthem under Section 2 of the National Anthem Act 1968.
“It can cause confusion among the public, and in line with Section 7(3)(d)(i) and (iii) of the Societies Act 1966, it should not be registered,” he said in a statement posted on the Home Ministry’s official Facebook page today.
Section 7(3)(d)(i) of the Act allows the ROS to refuse registration of any organisation whose name appears to mislead or deceive the public to the true character and purpose of a society, while Section 7(3)(d)(iii) allows for the same to apply if the ROS finds the name to be “undesirable”.

Utusan warns Ambiga could attract extremism
Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia has warned that Ambiga Sreenevasan who recently announced a new movement to combat racism, could instead attract extremism.
“The Malaysian people’s anger towards her, particularly among the Muslims on many issues, has yet to subside.
“Do not be a contemptible person who thinks of herself as noble (kaduk naik junjung), the worry is it will attract extremism,” said Awang Selamat, the newspaper’s pseudonym used to express its editorial stance.

IDIOT-TALK: THE ONLY WAY TO DESCRIBE IBAHIM ALI’S WORDS!
Ibrahim Ali wants to ‘date’ Ambiga for the sake of national unity
Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali took a dig today at the newly formed Negara-Ku movement set up to fight racism and extremism, saying he wanted to “date” the group’s co-chair Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan to exchange views in the interest of national integration.
…
“I agree to change my name to Samyhim to fulfil the conditions needed for Perkasa to be accepted into Negara-Ku, led by Ambiga. Perkasa has a right to be heard because Perkasa is a legitimate body.
“My name is Samyhim and I give Ambiga the name Aminah. It is part of the national integration process. It is also to protect Ambiga’s credibility so she is not seen as favouring anyone when dealing with Perkasa,” he added.

‘NEGARA KU’, a last ditch bid to save M’sia: Pak Samad, Ambiga form new NGO to fight racism
National laureate A Samad Said and former Malaysian Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan have formed a new NGO to battle racism and extremism in the nation.
The outfit is called, “A people’s movement to reclaim our nation (Negaraku)”.
Speaking at the launch today, Ambiga said following the general election, there has been an increase in racial and religious rhetoric in the country, as if certain quarters have a “hidden agenda” to create chaos.
These, she said, included “statements from certain leaders” about the May 13 racial riots of 1969.
Both Samad and Ambiga were former chairpersons of electoral watchdog Bersih. Joining them in Negaraku is former judge and human rights commissioner Simon Sipaun.
The coalition is made up of 60 other NGOs and is chaired by former Bersih steering committee member and Ikram vice president Zaid Kamaruddin.

Zaid (middle, in photo below) said that the coalition is non-partisan and is aimed at educating the rakyat on the constitution and their rights to resist extremist elements in the country.
ISMA says Ambiga’s new NGO is to fight Islam
ISMA says Negaraku’s aim is to oppose Malays and Islam, but Ambiga says it is to fight an increase in extremism.
KUALA LUMPUR: ISMA today slammed Negaraku, the new NGO jointly announced by National Laureate A Samad Said and former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan to fight racism and extremism.
“Put in any name but we know who you are and for whom you work,” said ISMA president Abdullah Zaik Rahman.
…
According to ISMA the new NGO only gives new face to old themes like humanism, liberalism and pluralism of religion.
“Their agenda remains the same, which is to oppose Islam as the federation’s official religion and the rights of Malays in their own land,” Abdullah said
