IPOH: An explosion in front of vacant shoplot at Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar here today caused panic among passers-by who thought that a bomb had exploded.

The 11am incident also caused a traffic jam along the main road when motorists slowed down their vehicles to check on the situation.

However, a police team dispatched to the scene later confirmed that someone had actually thrown a firecracker into a giant flower pot.

Ipoh district deputy police chief Superintendent Anuar Othman said the explosion also shattered part of the flower pot.

“Eyewitnesses said that they saw a man wearing a crash helmet standing near the flower pot before he immediately fled the scene when the firecracker went off,” he said here today.

To help the people get through these straitened times, Ipoh City Council is relaxing its rules to allow enterprising residents to set up a food stall at home to supplement the family income.

Residents may apply for a vendor’s licence to run a food stall in front of their houses. There will be no fee for the licence.

However, the business must be small scale and the food and drinks sold for take away only. Operating hours are either 6am to 10am or 3pm to 7pm. The vendor must also remove all equipment such as tables and umbrellas when business is done for the day.

All vendors must pass the Health Department’s health test.

Apartment project under scrutiny

IPOH: Residents of Permai Lake View apartments are questioning why government authorities approved a new residential block at a site earmarked for utilities and infrastructure.

Permai Lake View apartments joint management committee chairman Said Ahmad said the authorities concerned should not have approved the project and works should never have started on the site because:
– the site is not suitable for highrise development based on specialists and professional r
– building approvals have not been been ob
– the land is zoned for infrastructure and uti and
– the land is flood-prone.

He added that the company, MH Amanjaya Properties Sdn Bhd, had admitted that approval for the building plan has not been obtained and that drainage work had already started.

Our question is how could the drainage work have started without any approval. As far as we can see, the developer has only obtained a letter of no objection from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) dated March 3, with several conditions. This letter is subject to formal approval to begin work, Said told theSun.

The work is alleged to have started in December last year.

He said since the building plan is pending approval from the Ipoh City Council, construction work on drainage at the site should have not started. The Ipoh Local Plan 2020 (Proposed and Development Strategy) that was gazetted on July 5, 2012, shows the land was approved for utilities and infrastructure.

Projek Qube Tambun Tidak Jejas Kawasan Sekitar Permai Lake View

Last week, several local newspapers claimed that the project Qube Tambun negative impact on nature and cause flooding to nearby residents.

Media also reported that the project is opposed by the population, especially in the picturesque Lake View of a residential area adjacent to the project area.

Artwork defaced but painter willing to work with vandals

IPOH, Aug 15 — After seeing his handiwork defaced by graffiti artists, one would be forgiven for thinking that mural painter Eric Lai would be incensed.

Like his tolerance and harmony-themed artwork, however, the veteran artist has taken an unusual step — by welcoming a collaboration with the graffiti artists.

Lai was placed in charge of a large-scale art project in Jalan Masjid which involved the creation of 57 hand-painted murals in conjunction with the 57th Independence Day celebrations.

The project, commissioned by the Ipoh City Council in January last year, was meant to showcase 57 hand-painted murals by Lai and his art studio students.

The murals include depictions of children playing traditional games, portraits of icons like Bruce Lee and Nelson Mandela, and tributes to the MH370 and MH17 victims.

On July 30, Lai and his students discovered that the empty spaces beside his paintings had been defaced by graffiti artists who scribbled obscenities and suspected gang signs on the walls.
