Candles light up in Penang, KL in memory of Karpal

Candlelight vigils were held in Penang and Kuala Lumpur to pay tribute to the late Karpal Singh, whose sudden death in the early morning of Apr 17 shocked the nation.

In Penang, about 100 attended the event organised by ATC college law students at the Esplanade, where the crowd lit candles and placed them on a banner printed with the names of Karpal and his personal assistant Michael Cornelius.

Michael, 39, died along with his 74 year-old boss in a tragic car crash near the exit of Gopeng on the North-South highway.

As mourners wrote messages on the banner, the crowd held white candles and observed a minute of silence to pray for Karpal’s and Michael’s souls.

Vigil organiser Sanjey Balaraman, 22, said the students were moved to hold the event as Karpal is a legal icon who has inspired them all to take up law studies.

“The event is non-political and did not involve any political party,” he said, adding that Karpal’s nephew, Dalbinder Singh was invited to speak on behalf of the family last night.

*We grieve but Karpal Singh’s wife, Gurmit Kaur, has a broken heart…

Karpal Singh, my loving husband

Pillar of strength: Karpal with his beloved wife Gurmit Kaur.

Pillar of strength: Karpal with his beloved wife Gurmit Kaur.

Karpal Singh’s wife Gurmit Kaur had always been the rock in his life. Theirs was a love story that began when they first met when he was 16 and she was just eight. Below are excerpts from an interview with Gurmit by Chin Mui Yoon which was published in The Star on Sept 10, 2006, two years after he was disabled in an accident.

THE outspoken politician Malaysians know so well, never once approached the girl he had his eye on for a decade.

“He had set his sights on me a long time ago, but I was too young to know.

“On my birthday on May 10, 1987, when Karpal was under ISA detention, I was feeling particularly down and lost, and went to his office. Suddenly an assistant ran in calling, “Mr Karpal has sent you a letter!”

“Inside the envelope was a little card with a drawing on it. It started off with ‘To my girl in blue’ … You see, I had a lovely blue frock when I was nine or 10 which I wore everywhere. He remembered that!

“That was the most beautiful thing he had ever done just to tell me he was still there and that he loved me!

“I don’t know how he managed to get that card delivered right on time,” says Gurmit, her eyes misty, adding that she had the card framed.

VERMIN CRAWL OUT OF CRACKS IN THE WALL EVEN BEFORE KARPAL SINGH IS CREMATED!

Zul’s twist: ‘Allah killed him’ to ‘Goodbye friend’

After coming under fire for his initial tweets that Allah took Karpal Singh’s life in order to help advance the implementation of hudud in Malaysia, Zulkifli Noordin is now singing a different tune about his “friend’.

In his latest tweets, he wrote: “To Karpal, your roar for the poor and your voice against injustice, either in Parliament or in court will be missed by many. Goodbye my friend!”

In another tweet, the former Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP stated: “To my friend Gobind Singh Deo and family, do accept my deepest condolence. I am sure Karpal’s name will be tinted in gold in the history of Malaysia!”

Zulkifli also urged the opposition to respect the DAP leader’s passing and not to politicise the issue.

This morning, the former Perkasa vice-president, who is no stranger to putting his foot in his mouth, tweeted: “At a time when the PAS Kelantan government wants to implement hudud with the help of Umno, Allah made Karpal die because he was its foremost opponent!”

“May the struggle to implement hudud in Kelantan succeed. Thank God for the unity between PAS and Umno, and with Karpal no longer around, I believe the path is becoming clearer!”

WE GRIEVE BUT ZULKIFLI NORDIN, REJOICES.

ZULKIFLI NORDIN, PERKASA = BIGOT! RACIST!

On Twitter, he said that Allah has killed off Karpal.

The former PKR Bandar Baru Kulim MP’s remark on Twitter drew immediate condemnation, with some Twitter users calling him “insensitive” and “worse than an animal.”

“Karpal Singh is the sign of political righteousness. You are sign of Political Satanism @limkitsiang @teresakok @staronline,” said MIC strategic director S. Vell Paari using his Twitter account @vellpaari.

One Twitter user, @termosrudin replied to Zulkifli saying “Allah loves the late Karpal more (Allah lebih sayangkan Allahyarham)”.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — As Malaysians mourn the loss of veteran lawmaker Karpal Singh, Perkasa vice-president Datuk Zulkifli Noordin instead said the DAP leader’s passing removes a major obstacle towards implementing hudud or Islamic penal law in the country.

Karpal’s resistance to the implementation of hudud law has been well-documented and has often placed him at loggerheads with political allies from Islamist party PAS.“The Kelantan PAS government wants to enforce hudud law with the help of Umno. Allah has killed off Karpal who was the major opponent of its implementation! (Dlm keadaan kemelut Krjn PAS Klntn mau mlaksanakn hudud dgn bantuan UMNO, Allah tlh mmatikn Karpal yg mnjadi pnentang utama prlaksanaannya!)” he wrote using his Twitter handle @zulkiflinoordin.

Karpal had been one of the staunchest opponents to repeated attempts to introduce Islamic law in Malaysia.

One of his most iconic quotes is: “An Islamic state over my dead body”.

An emotional and teary morning

It was an emotional and teary morning at the Ipoh Hospital’s Forensic Department as Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh’s body arrived for a post-mortem at 7.20am.

Karpal’s body will be taken back to his family home in Penang today and he is expected to be cremated at the Sikh cremation hall on Jalan Gurdwara at 11am on Sunday.

Though he appeared distraught as he himself had been admitted to hospital in Kuala Lumpur recently, Gobind was calm and collected as he took questions from the army of reporters who have come to the hospital from Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang.

Karpal’s wife, Gurmit Kaur, was also in tears as she entered the waiting hall, wearing a purple scarf over her head, as relatives accompanied her into the Forensic Department’s waiting area.

She was speechless but her pain was apparent as many approach her to offer condolences, as they hugged her and held her tight.

We can all be Karpal Singh. Let us embrace and further his legacy for a better world. He was loyal (unsurprising in a Sikh, I hear you say), learned (as lawyers are expected to be, you say), courageous (to be expected from a warrior race), honest to the core, humble (like every poor Malaysian), resolute, upright, courteous, and not fascinated by money (unlike many). But he was all these things and more. He had class and he loved all Malaysians. Karpal Singh wanted all to be treated as children of this land. If we can inspire ourselves to be like him, this will be a happier world.
