Malaysiakini: Under attack!

UNDER ATTACK FROM UTUSAN!

Utusan: Malaysiakini an irresponsible ‘parking operator’

Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia has trained its guns on Malaysiakini again, this time berating the portal for allowing subscribers to post their comments without censorship.

Curiously drawing analogy with a lengthy diatribe on how parking operators should be responsible for whatever happens to cars parked within their compound despite disclaimers, it said Malaysiakini should do likewise.

Instead, wrote one of its editors Zulkiflee Bakar, the portal allows readers of its “pro-opposition” news to post whatever comments “without control”.

His lengthy rant titled ‘Malaysiakini and the habit of a camel’s head’ decried the portal for using its disclaimer for not taking any responsibility for the contents of the readers’ comments.

“Whether the comments could bring about harm to the community or nation is secondary to them, that is the so-called freedom that Malaysiakini wants to portray,” wrote Zulkiflee.

“If Malaysiakini is truly a responsible entity, it would emulate parking operators, who although are not responsible for the vehicles parked in their premises, would take preventive measures.”

Malaysiakini‘s comments section is a service available only to its subcribers, who are reminded of the rules and etiquette of posting their views that warns against “profanity, personal attacks, and antisocial behaviour”.

Offenders run the risk of having their right to post comments suspended. The terms of use also remind users that they are “fully responsible for the content you post” and to post responsibly.

Zulkiflee said just putting up a disclaimer is “irresponsible” and this showed Malaysiakini is “an irresponsible lot”.

Posterior-waggling group now target M’kini

The group which gained prominence after waving their posteriors in front of former Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan’s residence is now threatening to do the same against news portal Malaysiakini.

Armed Forces Veterans Association Mohd Ali Baharom (left) said he will organise a second series of the butt exercise in front of Malaysiakini’s office in Bangsar if it did not apologise over its report on the prime minister’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.

“I will do a second series in front of Malaysiakini (office), like how Ambiga was defeated.

“This is my promise to Malaysiakini if they do not apologise to the prime minister’s wife,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Also present at the press conference were 14 other NGOs under the Gabungan Sahabat 1Malaysia secretariat.

NGOs wants Zahid axed for handing award

A group of NGOs have demanded the sacking of Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his recent role in the conferring of an award to Malaysiakini.

Led by Armed Forces Veterans Association president Mohd Ali Baharom, better known as Ali Tinju, the groups called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to remove Zahid from his cabinet.

“We are saddened and angry that the Home Minister is insensitive and unwise, he could be described as ‘stupid’

“As a minister he should be mindful of the prime minister’s and his wife’s feelings as well as the rakyat’s, he should not be giving out awards on his whim,” Mohd Ali told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Many other mass media deserve such an honour, why was Malaysiakini glorified? To me Malaysiakini is a stooge of the Communist.

“I ask that the prime minister sack Zahid because he has caused all kinds of problems and has failed to complete his work,” he said.

Malaysiakini under black magic attack

Since its inception, Malaysiakini has grown accustomed to attacks in the form of harsh criticism, police raids, legal suits and even having its journalists barred from press conferences.

But the attack on our premises before daylight yesterday was the first time its detractors have resorted to the use of black magic.

Apart being splashed with red paint and presented with a live duck, the news portal also received three photographs of DAP MP Teresa Kok sealed in a transparent plastic covers, which also contained a fistful of rice grains and a needle each, wrapped with red thread.

These items have since been taken by the police for their investigation.

A check with those who have knowledge in such matters revealed that rice and needles are commonly used by practitioners of the black arts.

Declining to be named, one expert said: “The rice grains represent the ‘periuk nasi’ (livelihood) of a person or organisation. And the needle… Well what happens when there is a needle in your rice? It can kill you.”

“So this package was aimed at destroying the livelihood of the person or organisation.

“However, in this case, we cannot be certain if the person responsible had intended to destroy the politician or Malaysiakini’s livelihood. Perhaps it was both,” he added.

Police bag duck, Kok’s photos as evidence

A forensics team investigating this morning’s attack on the Malaysiakini office took back evidence, including the live duck and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s photographs, for analysis.

The team, from the Brickfields district police headquarters, began inspecting the site in Bangsar Utama, Kuala Lumpur, about 1.30pm, just after officers from the investigations unit concluded obtaining information on this morning attack.

They will also be looking at closed-circuit television camera feeds from the busy intersection outside the office.

Duck, red paint at Malaysiakini’s office

Red paint was splashed outside the office of independent news portal Malaysiakini in Bangsar Utama, Kuala Lumpur, this morning.

A cardboard box with a duck inside was left at the main entrance.

It was thought that the duck was dead, as there was no movement. The box could not be opened all the way pending police investigations.

However, when the cover was partially lifted about noon, it was found that the duck was alive, but barely moving.

A photograph of DAP’s Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok was taped to the box, with several others to the wall of the office. These were wrapped in plastic bags into which rice grains had been placed.

The paint was thrown on the walls and floor, as well as the Malaysiakini signboard, at the four-storey building. A motorcycle parked nearby was also splattered with the paint.

Malaysiakini graphics editor Azlan Zamhari, who was first to arrive at the office at 6.15am, said the paint was still wet.

“It was apparently thrown using five plastic bags,” he said.

A shop operator in the vicinity said that, when he arrived at 4.30am, the vandalism had already taken place.

A police report was lodged at the Travers police station at 10.40am.

When contacted, Kok condemned the attempt to threaten Malaysiakini journalists.

“The fact that my photo is placed on the box shows that the perpetrators are trying to link Malaysiakini to my Chinese New Year video clip,” she said.
