After Teresa Kok, Muslim NGOs now target Tony Pua
BY ELIZABETH ZACHARIAH
February 21, 2014
After attacking DAP’s Teresa Kok for allegedly insulting Islam and Malay rulers, Muslim NGOs are now targeting another DAP lawmaker – Tony Pua – for questioning the National Fatwa Council’s decision to ban Muslims from celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Pertubuhan Muafakat Sejahtera Masyarakat Malaysia (Muafakat) president Ismail Mina Ahmad said that Pua should be charged with sedition for “deliberately being provocative by insulting Islam”.
He was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia that Muslims do not need to “beg him to apologise” but should instead “drag him to court” because of his insults.
“We have to charge him immediately as a deterrent measure because he is testing the patience of Muslims,” he told the Umno-owned daily.

Utusan also reported that several mufti had urged Pua, who is also Petaling Jaya Utara MP, to withdraw his statement, questioning the religious council through his Facebook account recently.
Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad said Pua had no right to interfere in Islamic affairs as it has caused discord in the country.

Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad said Pua had no right to interfere in Islamic affairs as it has caused discord in the country.
Ismail said the DAP politician’s provocative statement was deliberate as he (Pua) believed that Muslims were not able to do anything as they were weak because they were not united.
“We believe that Tony Pua, as an intellectual and a political leader, actually understands the issues that are sensitive in society and religion.
“This was brought up knowingly just to provoke,” he had said.

IGP warns those who insult Jakim’s sermon
Police have identified the person who denounced last week’s Friday prayer sermon urging Muslims to avoid celebrating Valentine’s Day.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said police have identified the person who denounced the Islamic Development Department’s (Jakim) Friday prayer sermon urging Muslims to avoid celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Khalid said police would not hesitate to use its most hardest law to punish those who insulted Islamic teachings.
Several people had commented on news report on Jakim’s Friday sermon asking the Muslims to not celebrate Valentine’s Day as it would only generate more social woes such as premarital sex and baby-dumping.
“For a diverse country like Malaysia I don’t think it is appropriate for others to talk about Islam.
“That is not the way to criticise because it will only cause more anger among the people. We should not be questioning the faith of others,” Khalid told reporters today.
However, he declined to comment on the identity of the person as an investigation was being carried out.

Valentine’s Day 2014: A Culture War In Malaysia Pitting Conservative Muslim Malays Against Chinese
on February 14 2014 11:02AM
Valentine’s Day serves as the stage for another volley in the endless culture wars between conservative Islam and modern, Western-looking secularism in the Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia.
Muslim groups in Malaysia have again condemned Valentine’s Day as a form of cultural pollution that poses a threat to traditional values and which they claim leads to abortion, alcoholism, promiscuity, fraud and even baby-dumping, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported. In an official text delivered to mosques around the country, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (known by its Malay language acronym JAKIM) declared: “Social ceremonies such as this [Valentine’s Day] are a stepping-stone towards greater social ills … [and] can invite disaster and moral decay among youths.”
…
“Have hatred and disgust towards activities which are against our faith, code, and the human civilization,” added the sermon by JAKIM. “Prevent yourselves from things which are prohibited such as free mingling between men and women, intoxicating drinks, and holding ‘extreme’ social events where everything pushes Muslims away from the real teachings of Islam. … We should not be following practices of Jahiliyah [pre-Islamic times]. Doing good alone is not enough if we do not keep our faith in Islam strong.”

Malaysian Islamic authorities took their annual swipe at Valentine’s Day today, calling it a threat to Muslim values, but 138 couples took part in a mass wedding to mark the date.
In its official Friday sermon text distributed to mosques, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) blamed Valentine’s Day for everything from alcoholism to abortion.
“Social ceremonies such as this are a stepping-stone towards greater social ills such as fraud, mental disorder caused by alcohol, abortion and baby-dumping, and other negative ills that can invite disaster and moral decay among youths,” it said.
However, members of the large Chinese minority celebrated the day with a mass wedding of 138 couples.
The lovers tied the knot at the Thean Hou temple in Kuala Lumpur, releasing scores of heart-shaped balloons after the ceremony.
Another 70 couples were to wed in the afternoon in individual ceremonies, an official at the temple said.
“We’re doing it specially for this year as only once in 19 years does Valentine’s Day coincide with Chap Goh Mei,” the official said.
Chap Goh Mei is the annual Chinese Lantern Festival.
