i-City closes leisure park over rowdy traders
Caught on record: A CCTV grab of the tussle between the i-City’s security team and the illegal traders in the security room.
SHAH ALAM: Popular tourism centre i-City has temporarily closed the operations of Leisure Park @i-City for three days to protest against the increasing number of illegal traders in its premises.
The three-day closure begins today, prompted by rowdy traders.
The decision is expected to cost i-City developer i-Berhad millions of ringgit in losses.
In a statement to The Star, I-Berhad deputy chairman Datuk Eu Hong Chew said the decision was an internal measure to plan appropriate action against illegal trading activities.
“The activities of these groups of illegal traders have intensified over the past few months to such an extent that it is not only about illegal trading but it’s beginning to affect public safety.
“We cannot condone this any longer as the image of Leisure Park @i-City as a safe and secure tourism attraction will be adversely impacted,” he said.
…
The traders have been accused of “forcing” visitors to buy trinkets at hefty prices within i-City’s premises.
Annoyed by the traders, several tourists lodged reports with the Tourism and Culture Ministry, prompting it to send a letter to the management.
i-City then stepped up security but the guards were threatened and manhandled by the errant traders.

SHAH ALAM: Investigations are underway to determine how three men gained entry into I-City’s interactive wax museum, Red Carpet @ I-City, and torched several wax figures on display there.
I-City information manager Tang Soke Ching said police suspected it was an act of sabotage.

SHAH ALAM, Feb 3–Investigations are underway to determine how three men gained entry into I-City’s Wax Museum here last Wednesday, and torched at least ten wax figurines in what police has described as an act of sabotage.
In a statement today, I-Berhad, the master developer of i-City, said the Red Carpet@i-City was hit by a break-in which resulted in a fire that damaged a portion of the showcase.
It said that according to the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, which had been handed over to the police, there was a high likelihood that the break-in and fire were the work of saboteurs involving three individuals.
