YOUTUBE STAR NAMEWEE’S “BANGLASIA” TO LAUNCH GLOBAL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN ON KICKSTARTER
SINGAPORE, 3RD DECEMBER 2015 – In conjunction with Singapore International Film Festival 2015 (SGIFF), Award-winning director and YouTube sensation Namewee is running a 40-day global fundraising campaign on kickstarter.com to raise US$ 500,000 to complete the director’s cut version and secure worldwide release of his feature-length action-comedy film, BANGLASIA. Dubbed the “most ambitious ever film crowdfunding project in Asia in terms of pledge amount”, this campaign is announced in partnership with US media platform 8sian Media, which holds exclusive global distribution rights and Asian digital entertainment network WebTVAsia, its exclusive digital campaign partner.
BANGLASIA, starring Namewee with a multi-ethnic Asian cast such as leading Bangladeshi actor Nirab Hossain, Malaysian comedian Saiful Apek and Singaporean actress Atikah Suhaimi, tells of a group of multi-cultural individuals coming together during a time in which their cultural tolerance and understanding are being tested.
The Malaysian-made film was screened at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2015 (OAFF) and New York Asian Film Festival 2015 (NYAFF) of which NYAFF festival director Goran Topalovic said: “We are proud to host the premiere of a movie that is hilarious and surreal comedy that touches on issues of political corruption, mass hysteria about immigration, and out-of-control nationalism.”

“Banglasia” gained worldwide attention when it was part of the line-up at the Osaka Asian Film Festival and New York Asian Film Festival earlier this year.
The team also announced last night a crowd-funding project using American platform Kickstarter to raise US$500,000 (RM2.1 million).
The project, the biggest in Asia, will allow the movie to recoup its costs so it can be uploaded on the Internet for a global audience.

Namewee’s banned movie, ‘Banglasia’, screened in Singapore
Controversial YouTube star-turned-director Namewee announced plans for a worldwide release of his banned movie “Banglasia” yesterday, when the 90-minute film was screened for the first time in Southeast Asia at the Singapore International Film Festival.
“Banglasia” was completed in 2013, but was never released after the Malaysian Film Censorship Board ruled that 31 scenes in the movie depicting situations in Malaysia were inaccurate and misleading, adding that they would have to be removed or reshot in order for the film to be approved.
“If you cut 31 scenes, you’re left with 10 minutes of a 90-minute film,” Namewee, whose real name is Wee Chee Meng, told The Malaysian Insider in an exclusive interview ahead of last night’s screening.

Namewee’s banned Banglasia gets New York premiere http://dlvr.it/B90Vyj
PETALING JAYA: Banglasia, an action comedy by controversial filmmaker Namewee which has been banned in Malaysia, will be shown at the New York Asian Film Festival.
Festival director Goran Topalovic said it was proud to host the premiere of a movie that is “hilarious and surreal comedy that touches on issues of political corruption, mass hysteria about immigration, and out-of-control nationalism.”
“This is the second movie by Namewee we’ve screened, and our audience loves his irreverent approach to filmmaking, his refusal to compromise, and his go-for-broke sense of satire.
“While Banglasia makes fun of issues that are of great concern to Malaysian audiences, Americans can definitely identify with them, too,” he said in a statment.
