Generally, someone who is amok recognizes neither family nor friend. He attacks all and sundry! To run amok is to be possessed by a murderous frenzy, and has been noted to occur in Malaysia with some frequency.
At times, the amok is clear about what he wants to do: hurt or kill someone specific, like a parent, a sibling or a colleague.
While men are more likely to run amok, women do run amok, too.
Amok is a Malay word that has entered the English language and running amok has a similar connotation as going berserk.

SIBU: A farmer in Belaga has been arrested for allegedly killing his father over a family matter.
Belaga OCPD, deputy supt,. Melay Tinggom said on Tuesday that the 26-year suspect murdered his father by slitting his throat using a parang.
In the 4am incident on Monday (Jan 1), the suspect suddenly went amok in the corridor of his longhouse in rural Belaga.
A 39-year longhouse resident tried to calm him down but the suspect threw the parang at him.
The suspect then picked up the parang and injured another resident.
Following this he saw his 60-year old father sitting at a corner. He dashed to him and cut his throat with the parang.

Man runs amok, slits own father’s throat after drunken argument in Sarawak
SARAWAK (Malaysia) — For many years, a 26-year-old man had been holding a grudge against his father for allegedly mistreating him since he was little.
His father allegedly constantly scolded and punished him for even the smallest infraction.
On Monday (Jan 1), the man’s pent up rage came forth in a display of deadly fury during a family gathering at their longhouse in Long Pawah, Sarawak.
The man ran amok, grabbed a machete and slit his 60-year-old father’s throat, killing him instantly.
Earlier before the incident, the man was believed to be drunk when he became embroiled in an argument with his neighbours at the longhouse.
The argument, however, was resolved by the longhouse chief and the man left.
However, the man returned not long after. This time armed with a machete, he attacked his father and slashed his throat, leaving the elderly man to die of massive blood loss.

SIBU (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – A construction worker went amok in Sibu, in Sarawak, and set ablaze his 35-year-old colleague’s car, after he was told that December’s salary would be late.
In the incident at 3.50pm on Saturday (Dec 30), the 30-year old suspect had also assaulted the victim’s wife, 47, who is also a construction worker with the same company.
Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zailanni Amit said on Sunday that the couple were with their colleagues waiting at their workplace in Jalan Aman to get their salaries.
“The suspect showed up and everybody was told by the boss that their salary would be paid late,” he said.
ACP Zailanni said the suspect, who was drunk after a drinking session earlier, went berserk.
The couple tried to calm him down.
The suspect, however, was infuriated by them and started to beat the woman by using a broomstick. He also threw a stone at her stomach.
He then picked up a metal rod and started to hit the boss, 24, on his head and left hand.
Seeing he was out of control, the couple tried to run away.
However, the suspect lit a fire and burnt their car.

SUNGAI SIPUT: A 40-year-old mentally unsound man was arrested after slashing his brother’s arm with a machete at their home in Kampung Muhibbah Fasa 2B here.
Sungai Siput OCPD Superintendent Abd Fatah Abd Rahman said the man
had slashed his 43-year-old brother’s left arm and also threatened to hurt their mother during the Sunday noon incident.
“A team of policemen led by Insp Wan Mohd Zakirudin Arifin arrived at the scene to find the man standing in front of his house with a 0.4m-long machete,” said Supt Abdul Fatah.
He added that policemen at the scene tried unsuccessfully for an hour to get the suspect to surrender.
“We also warned him three times that we would shoot him with a taser before he tried to attack the policemen,” he said.
Supt Abd Fatah said a policeman then fired the taser gun at the suspect from a 5m distance and subdued him.

IPOH: A parang-wielding man ran amok and injured a Rakan Cop member at Taman Sri Intan, Menglembu here.
Deputy Ipoh OCPD Supt Abdul Rani Alias said Yeong Wai Ken, 38, was slashed on his right arm when he and four others tried to calm the 28-year-old man down in the 10.40pm incident on Saturday.
Supt Abdul Rani said Yeong had sustained an 8cm-long cut on his arm and was being treated at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
“Earlier, the Rakan Cop members had received a call about a man running amok there and proceeded to the area.
“The man was smashing up car windows as the members tried to calm him down,” he said.
“The man turned aggressive and charged towards the members before injuring Yeong,” he added.
Supt Abdul Rani said the man, who has five previous criminal records, was eventually apprehended by the members and was arrested shortly by the police.

A SETTLER lost his temper and threatened to murder his wife and their children when she refused to have sex with him, reported Harian Metro.
The 57-year-old man asked his wife for intercourse at about 10.15pm on Friday at their home in Jempol, but was turned down.
In a fit of rage, he smashed plates, bowls and vases, said Jempol district police chief Supt Noorzainy Mohd Noor.
“He ran amok and also damaged other things in the house.
“The man also broke the aquarium and then threatened to kill his wife and children,” he said.
He added that the wife refused to have sex because they had filed for divorce and were due in court yesterday.

Foreign national shot dead after running amok

KOTA KINABALU: A foreign national was shot dead by the police when he went amok in an incident in Kampung Pondo, Pulau Gaya, yesterday.
Kota Kinabalu City police chief ACP M.Chandra said the incident happened about 5pm when a police team went to the suspect’s house to arrest him for allegedly causing hurt to his wife.
He said angered by the police presence, the man, in his 30s, who was armed with a knife, lunged at one of the policemen. However, the policeman managed to evade the attack and fled before jumping into the sea.
However, the suspect, went after the policeman and jumped into the water. Despite warning from other policemen to surrender, the man refused, forcing the police to fire at him, he said in a statement here today.
Chandra said the suspect, who was shot in the back, was carried to a boat to be taken to hospital for treatment, but died at the Marine Police jetty.

In the 9.50am incident, the 31-year-old man hit his paralysed brother, 25, on the head using a coconut grater and stick, killing the victim on the spot.
According to sources, his 52-year-old aunt who lives nearby went to check on the situation after hearing loud noises.
It was learnt that her aunt also suffered the same fate as her paralysed nephew when the suspect hit her on the head with a brick before he fled the scene.

Suluk man loitering near woman’s toilet runs amok
KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed Suluk man believed to be mentally ill, ran amok after police stopped him from loitering near a women’s toilet and being a nuisance to people who wanted to use it.
The 24-year-old man, a former Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang patient, was causing a nuisance at a petrol station in Tanjung Aru at about 11.55am Sunday when police were called in.
However, the suspect threw a hammer at the police vehicle when approached and sped off on his bicycle.
Police caught up with the suspect near the mosque several kilometres away and tried to talk to him but the man refused to listen.
City police chief Assist Comm M. Chandra said the suspect instead smashed the police vehicle’s screen using the hammer.
“He was caught when a police patrol unit came to assist,” he said, adding that a brief scuffle broke out as the suspect refused to release the hammer.

Three injured after man on bike runs amok with parang
KOTA KINABALU: Three people were injured when a man ran amok and went on an attacking spree at an estate in Kinabatangan, on the east coast of Sabah.
The 27-year-old suspect, who was riding his motorcycle, had punched another motorcyclist in the ribs, causing the 42-year-old victim to fall off his bike. The suspect then snatched a parang on the victim’s bike and fled.
He then lingered at a nearby housing estate and slashed the first person he saw, a 36-year-old labourer, before fleeing again, in the 6.30am incident Tuesday.
The suspect later crashed his motorcycle into another motorcyclist, causing the man to fall off the vehicle.
The victim, however, managed to run away before the suspect could further harm him.
It was until the suspect crashed into a tree that passers-by managed to stop him from hurting more people, and called the police.

Security guard runs amok in bank, stabs officer to death
JOHOR BARU: A security guard ran amok in a bank in Taman Molek here, allegedly killing an officer and seriously injuring another on Friday.
It is learnt that the suspect was believed to have had an argument with one of the bank officers before the incident, which happened at around 3.30pm at the first floor of the three-storey building.
Out of rage, he slashed a female bank officer with a knife and stabbed a 33-year-old male officer on his face and neck, causing the victim to bleed to death.
A witness, who only wanted to be identified as Wong, 45, said he was at the ground floor of the bank with his daughter.
“I wanted to change my daughter’s ATM card when we heard commotions coming from the top floor.
“Suddenly, we heard someone screaming and customers running out of the bank when the guard came out holding a blood-tainted knife,” he said.
Wong added he quickly grabbed his daughter’s hand and ran out of the bank fearing for their safety together with other customers and bank employees.

Mental patient kills another at ward
SIBU: A patient at the psychiatric ward of a hospital here is believed to have been killed by another mental patient.
The 43-year-old victim, who was admitted eight years ago, was found lying in a pool of blood at 6.30am on Wednesday by a medical assistant.
The medical assistant was on duty when he heard loud shrieks coming from the toilet in the ward. He tried to enter, but the door was locked. He broke the door down and found the victim, who was bleeding, and another mental patient standing next to him.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 — Police have arrested an Indonesian woman, believed to be mentally unstable, for walking naked in broad daylight last Friday.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC Zainuddin Ahmad said the woman, in her 20s, was later handed over to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for mental treatment.

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly attacked his 60-year-old mother ‘with a hard object’ at their home at Clementi on Wednesday night around 11.30pm.
Shin Min Daily News reported that the drama unfolded over two hours after the suspect’s sister raised the alarm by shouting from the flat’s master bedroom to “call the police…my brother wants to kill my mum”.
Her plea for help was heard by a couple, Mr Ma and his wife Madam Li, who were at the coffeeshop below Blk 606 along Clementi West Street 1.

When reporters arrived on the scene, the suspect – who is of medium build and sporting tattoos on his right arm – was seen walking around naked and expressionless in the sixth-floor unit.
Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at around 11.43pm and with the help of the police, rescued both the suspect’s sister and mother from the unit by entering through the front door.
However, the suspect then threatened to jump and locked himself in one of the rooms for over an hour.
At about 1am, two SCDF officers managed to forcefully enter the flat through the windows after abseiling down from the 8th floor.
The suspect was seen strapped to a stretcher and being wheeled out to an ambulance at around 1.30am. He was covered in a white towel from top to toe, reported Shin Min Daily News.

GEORGE TOWN: An agitated foreign visitor caused a stir when he went on a rampage on the upper floor a hotel here today.
The man in his 50s, from the United States, had vandalised an outdoor structure of the hotel at Lorong Kinta about 11am.
The man, who appeared disoriented, had damaged the hotel’s outdoor decorative lighting at its fire emergency exit on the fourth floor of the building.

KLUANG – A mother of three, whose hands and feet were chopped off by her deranged husband, is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit.
After he committed the barbaric act, the unemployed man drank poison and hanged himself.
Jealousy is believed to be the main reason for the brutal assault.
A neighbour, who declined to be identified, claimed that the victim, K. Menaga, 44, had been working as a dishwasher at a hotel in Singapore and stayed at the republic for the past 15 years.
The neighbour said the victim was the family’s sole breadwinner as her 47-year-old husband was jobless.
“She only comes back once a month to see their three children and her mother-in-law, who has been taking care of their children, and also to give money to them.
“Every time she comes back, they will always quarrel because the husband accused her of having an affair with a man who sometimes sent her home from Singapore,” the neighbour said,
The victim’s brother K. Ravichantaran, 47, said her sister was currently unconscious at the intensive care unit of the Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital here.

Andrea Tay Su Lin, 51, had been acting strangely for some weeks. She attacked her mother, Rosaline Lim,75, a cleaner, with a knife and chopper in the living room of their flat at Block 105 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on June 4 this year.
After killing her, Andrea chopped her up, gouged out her eyes and cut off her tongue, and threw them out the window.

New grisly details of the double deaths — of a mother and daughter — that occurred at Block 105, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on Jun 4 have emerged.
The women were identified as 75-year-old Rosaline Lim and 51-year-old Andrea Tay in an earlier report.
Lim was found in a unit on the sixth storey with multiple stab wounds, while Tay was believed to have jumped down from the block. The latter’s legs were severed from the impact.
An autopsy performed on Lim the following day (Jun 5) revealed that many of the stab wounds on her had been inflicted after she died.
Forensics also discovered that some of her body parts were missing, reports a Lianhe Wanbao article dated today (Dec 2).
They included both her eyes, her tongue and a right lung. The organs were suspected to have been cut off.

When police rushed back to the crime scene, they found Lim’s eyeballs and tongue on a grass patch near her block.
Investigators told the coroner that police have yet to recover Lim’s missing right lung.

PENDANG: Three policemen were slashed by a mentally-ill man who ran amok in Kampung Kerkau here yesterday.
The policemen were responding to pleas by the suspect’s mother to take him to hospital after he failed to take his medication.
One of the victims received 10 stitches on his head while another two sustained injuries on the left hand and calf respectively.
Two of them were warded at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here while the third victim with injuries on his calf had been discharged today.
The 28-year-old suspect, who was also injured during the incident, received stitches on his head and being detained at a psychiatric ward in Alor Star Hospital.

KUCHING: A mentally-disturbed man was left with both arms and legs broken after he was set upon by an angry mob for attacking a coffee shop patron in Poh Kwong Park with a screwdriver yesterday.
The incident took place around 9am, when the 58-year-old man, who is known to suffer from mental illness, approached a customer while hewas having breakfast with his family and attacked him without warning.
The unprovoked assault drew the ire of other patrons at the shop, who pounced on the deranged man and beat him up before calling for an ambulance.

IPOH – Seorang lelaki dipercayai kurang siuman menggemparkan anggota di Balai Polis Manjoi di sini selepas secara tiba-tiba memasuki perkarangan balai sebelum menghayun parang kepada salah seorang anggota wanita dan menjerit meminta supaya diberikan sepucuk pistol.
Dalam kejadian kira-kira jam 7.40 malam itu, lelaki berusia 42 tahun yang juga bekas guru itu dikatakan mengamuk dan mengugut seorang anggota polis wanita yang sedang bertugas di kaunter pertanyaan sambil memegang parang panjang.
Ketua Polis Daerah Ipoh Asisten Komisioner Sum Chang Keong berkata, suspek yang memegang parang sepanjang 0.6 meter bertindak menghayun senjata itu ke arah anggota wanita terbabit.
Katanya, empat anggota peronda MPV kemudiannya bertindak mengepung balai berkenaan sebelum suspek membuang parang yang dipegangnya selepas dipujuk salah seorang anggota.
Menurutnya, selepas suspek melepaskan parang dipegangnya, polis kemudiannya terus menangkapnya walaupun berlaku sedikit pergelutan.
Sum berkata, hasil siasatan awal mendapati suspek adalah bekas guru sekolah menengah berhampiran dan sudah mengambil cuti tanpa gaji selama setahun kerana disyaki menghadapi masalah mental.

SIBU: A woman singer who ran amok was shot with a taser gun by the police on Friday morning at her friend’s house in Durin.
Before she went berserk, the 37-year-old woman had complained of chest pain.
Her friend summoned an ambulance, but she went berserk as paramedical personnel were checking on her.
She was said to have taken hold of a sharp object and charged at one of them.

In Butterworth, at about 3am, a mentally ill man, in his 50s, went into the porch of a single-storey-terrace house two cars were parked. He smashed the windscreens and windows one car and the glass door of the house.
He then set his own motorcycle on fire. The fire spread to the boot of the other car, a Toyota Vios.
When the police arrived, they found the man lying on the floor with minor burns.

MIRI: A 27-year-old man was apprehended by the police yesterday for intruding into his neighbour’s house and running amok.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11am.
Fearing for their safety, the terrified neighbour called up the man’s father, who was living nearby at Canada Hill.
The father immediately rushed to the neighbour’s house and tried his best to coax his son to calm down.
Unfortunately, he (the father) failed to calm the son down which forced him to call the police for help.
It was believed that the suspect was under the influence of illegal substance (drugs).
A mobile police vehicle (MPV) rushed to the scene and nabbed the man.

Amok naked man burns down workers’ quarters in Ranau
KOTA KINABALU: A plantation labourer burned down the workers’ quarters he was staying in after running amok at a remote village in the interior Ranau district late Wednesday.
A Toyota Hilux pick up truck that was parked nearby was also destroyed in the 11pm incident.
The 53-year-old man appeared to have suffered psychological problems just before the incident by stripping naked and demanding his fellow workers beat him up at Kampung Mindohuon Lama some 200kms from the city.
Witnesses said the man had been walking around in front of the workers quarters and talking incoherently before suddenly stripping off all his clothes.
His fellow workers tried to subdue him when he started shouting asking to be beaten up.
After appearing to have quietened down, the man was left on his own.
The man then grabbed a container filled with petrol and doused the wooden quarters with it before setting it on fire.

Labourer who ran amok ‘a violent and angry man’
KUALA LUMPUR: The labourer who ran amok and slashed his 82-year-old mother and brother at their home in Taman Bukit Anggerik near here allegedly has a history of violence.
The man, in his 50s, beat his sisters, ex-wife and children in the past, according to the brother who was slashed on his head and hands.

“He would punch the wall, throw things and make noises,” he claimed at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).
The victim said he even went to a Chinese temple to pray and seek guidance for his brother.
Before the attack, the victim said he was watching TV with his mother in the living room while his brother was in a room upstairs.
“Suddenly, my brother came down with a parang and attacked me,” he said, adding that his mother was also slashed when she tried to stop the attack.
The victim said he and his mother locked the gate and quickly left the house, adding that he then informed a neighbour who called the police.
When police arrived, they found the labourer had locked himself in one of the rooms.

KUALA LUMPUR: A labourer ran amok and slashed his 82-year-old mother and brother with a parang at their home in Taman Bukit Anggerik here.
The man, in his 50s, slashed his mother and brother, who is also in his 50s, at about 3pm yesterday.
Cheras OCPD Senior Asst Comm Mohan Singh said police were investigating the cause of the incident. He added that the suspect was believed to be under the influence of drugs.

Naked shopper causes stir at shopping centre

SEGAMAT: A fully naked man caused a stir at the payment counter of a shopping centre here when he sauntered into the premises along Jalan Ros here on Saturday night.
It is learnt that the man, believed to be mentally unstable, entered the premises at about 8.30pm and just stood at the payment counter to the horror of weekend shoppers.
The man, who is in his 50s, was believed to have been in the town area for the past few weeks and has been sleeping at the car park areas near the commercial shop lots.

In northern Kota Marudu, a man had threatened to kill his fellow villagers. In fact, his family had left the same village earlier, fearful of his threats.
3 policemen arrived at the village to arrest Jetin Kutio, 30. As they approached him, he cut his hands before running towards the policemen, who then fired a warning shot.
The man ignored that and charged at them, so they had to shoot. Fortunately, they killed him.
Unfortunately, a farmer who suddenly appeared behind the suspect was hit by a stray bullet.

Man stabs himself, pulls out intestines as pasar malam shoppers watch in horror

HUTAN MELINTANG: Passersby of a pasar malam site at Batu 12 here could only watch in horror as a mentally unsound man stabbed himself in his abdomen and pulled out his intestine.
In the 1pm incident on Thursday, the man Shurkey Morthi, 42, was walking in the area talking to himself and looked disturbed.
Eyewitnesses said they saw him holding a scissors and dared not approached him.

However before police could arrived, Morthi, who is unemployed, stabbed himself with the scissors and pulled out his intestine.
“After pulling out his intestine, he proceeded to cut it,” added another eyewitness.
Morthi was later rushed to Hospital Teluk Intan by ambulance for treatment but died at 6pm at the Emergency Ward.

KANGAR: Quick action by a housewife from Kampung Bunga Mas Timur, Simpang Empat, here had spared her 11-year-old son from a life threatening situation when he was attacked by a knife-wielding mentally unsound neighbour.

BATU PAHAT: A man, said to be mentally-challenged, was believed to have killed his wife with a meat cleaver before “surrendering” himself to police.
Batu Pahat deputy OCPD Supt Mat Razali Awang said Tan Wei Chyi, 37, was found laying in a pool of blood by her bed at her house in Taman Setia Jaya here about 11.45am yesterday.
“When police arrived at the scene, the front door was wide open and the victim’s husband was found sitting in the hall of the two-storey house,” he said.
Supt Mat Razali said police also found a meat cleaver by the side of Tan’s head.

Amok who attacked daughters is in hospital with head injuries
BANGI: The jobless man who attacked three of his daughters with a machete, killing his youngest, is in police custody at the Kajang Hospital.
Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said Friday the man is receiving treatment for injuries to his head.
“We believe he injured his head badly when he fell into the river while running away.
“He will remain under police custody while he receives treatment for his injuries before we remand him,” he said adding that the case was being investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Neighbours shocked by seven-year-old girl’s murder

BANGI: The murder of a seven-year-old girl by her father has shocked neighbours at the peaceful Section 4 area at Bandar Baru Bangi here.
The man, said to be depressed, attacked three of his daughters on Thursday evening with a machete before fleeing into the bushes behind his house along Jalan 4/9G.
He was caught by police two hours later covered in blood with injuries to his head along the banks of Sungai Langat about 300m from his house.

UPDATED: Father runs amok: Kills 7-year old child, slashed 2 other children
KAJANG: A man who slashed his 7-year old daughter to death and seriously injured his two other children, aged 10 and 12, has been arrested.
The man was found by police lying at the side of a river, about 300-metre from his house in Bandar Baru Bangi here.
He was found writhing in pain with serious head injuries. He apparently suffered the injury while trying to jump over the river.
Selangor Police deputy chief DCP Datuk Abd Rahim Jaafar said the incident happened about 4.15pm.

By the time police arrived, they found the three girls lying in a pool of blood.
The 7-year old was already dead while the other two girls were lying unconscious with numerous slash wounds.

Girl killed, two sisters slashed after dad runs amok

BANGI: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly murdered by her own father while her two sisters were severely injured at their home in Bandar Baru Bangi.
It is learnt that the girls’ 15-year-old sister came home at about 4.15pm Thursday to find two girls injured in the living room with their father was holding a bloodstained parang.
The sister ran upstairs before calling the police.
The father then fled the scene.
