‘Unapproved’ McDonald’s kangkung ad retracted

The popular fastfood chain told Malaysiakini that the material was actually “unapproved” and slipped through official vetting.

“McDonald’s Malaysia wishes to clarify that due to a communication oversight, the unapproved visual was produced and made its way to our restaurants.

“All the materials have been immediately removed,” it said in a brief reply to the portal.

The material, first spotted on tables at McDonald’s restaurants in the Klang Valley as part of the McSavers marketing campaign, reads:

“Harga sayur tak turun tapi harga burger tetap turun.” (The price of vegetables did not go down, but burger prices have.)

The materials were removed from tables a few days later.

Chicken slaughtered, blood smeared on banner

A group of angry protesters from Muslim NGOs slaughtered four chickens today and smeared blood from the birds on a cloth poster with the faces of representatives from DAP and PKR.

The group that dubbed itself Council of Islamic NGOs carried out the bloody act under the banner of ‘Protest against insult to Malay leadership, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Islam and Malay dignity by a splinter of politicians, leaders and Chinese chauvinists.’

The killing of the live chickens took place near the Puduraya bus terminal and government offices at Jalan Tun Perak in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

A kangkung-for-coffee deal has drawn a mix of first-timers and regular customers to a café in Section 13, Petaling Jaya today.

Artisan Coffee was voted as the best place for coffee in Time Out: Kuala Lumpur magazine’s annual food awards in 2012, and was a finalist in the same competition in 2013.

The offer was only available today from opening until 1pm at Artisan Coffee’s outlets in Bangsar and Section 13. Its other outlet in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur is not participating.

By 11.30am, baristas at the Petaling Jaya outlet told Malaysiakini that customers had redeemed 30 cups of coffee in this manner, after starting operations at 8am.

One of the customers, 19-year old student Lionel Kueh, said he is unfamiliar with how the ongoing buzz about water spinach came about, but found out about the offer through signage posted at the café several days ago.

He added that he had purchased the bundles of water spinach for RM1 each, and described the offer as ‘affordable’.
