KUALA LUMPUR,. Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria has warned authorities against allowing beer festivals, amid the regular annual backlash by Muslims against Oktoberfest events this month.

The mufti told Malay daily Sinar Harian that assisting the consumption of alcohol, such as allowing beer festivals, is just “as sinful” as drinking it.

“The government cannot give permission, that is against the Constitution. They have to understand that. Beer festivals cannot be allowed because the Constitution says that Islam is the religion of the federation,” he was quoted saying.

He had also told non-Muslims to “respect all Islamic codes”, again citing Islam’s position in the Constitution.

Despite Harussani’s assertion, Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution also says that “other religions may be practised in peace and harmony in any part of the federation”, and does not mean that non-Muslims are subject to Islamic laws.

Article 3(4) also states that the provision of Islam as the religion of the federation does not derogate from any other provision, such as the freedom of assembly and other civil liberties of citizens.

“[If this permission is given] it’s the same as drinking beer then saying ‘I’m not drinking beer’, because allowing [beer festivals] is subject to same code as drinking.

“When it comes to drinking beer, those who buy, helping to buy or showing where to buy, the sin is the same as drinking. Beer is the biggest of vice,” the mufti was quoted saying.

The report did not indicate if he elaborated on Islamic scriptures or arguments to back his assertion.

PDRM, don’t bother, Harussani has immunity

YOURSAY ‘The cops would have given Harussani nasi lemak and coffee.’

Police have quizzed mufti on ‘spill blood’ remark

Ferdtan: Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, you say that Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria has been questioned by the police? Really?

We want to believe you but we can’t. Many times we had been fooled and lied to by the police. So what is one more?

If it is really true why did you decline to say when he was questioned and reveal further details on the matter?

For the many of Harussani’s transgressions in the past of the country’s laws, the police have never dared to act against this Umno-loving mufti, so IGP, what’s new?

In fact, we think that this Perak mufti is powerful enough to give the police his middle finger if he wants to.

IGP, even your wish for the ISA to be reinstated, you still cannot touch him. Obviously he has powerful Umno friends.

MA: This Perak mufti has committed a litany of misdeeds over the years. Wasn’t this the man who said a church in Ipoh was converting Muslims by the hordes and eventually twisted the story to lay blame on a girl who sent the original SMS.

If you, IGP, add all this you can bring a lorry-load of cases against Harussani. Indeed, we should test the hudud laws on the mufti.

Ericlcc: If the mufti was really called in, it would have been a great PR (public relations) for the police, so why the silence? Unless there was really no investigation to begin with.

Doc: The cops would have given Harussani nasi lemak, coffee and asked him about his family and then let him go.

The next day, the IGP will issue a statement that Harussani is one really nice fellow and the press had misquoted him regarding his death treat edict but the kind-hearted mufti is willing to forgive and forget.

In light of this, the police have no choice but to close the case – NFA (no further action).

Quigonbond: Need the IGP ask why we are only interested to know certain people? Isn’t it patently obvious that the police have been partisan and biased and therefore to facilitate fair reporting the reporters ask the sensitive questions for which answers the government is unwilling to give because of political expediency?

Our IGP really need to work on his EQ (emotional quotient).

Anonymously: I hope PDRM will let the rakyat know the outcome of their investigations, since the matter concerns public interests.

Ipohcrite: “We probe all. But you are only interested in certain people,” said Khalid.

This statement is a Freudian slip made by the IGP by revealing his own tendency to probe only those who are not with the Umno-approved thinking.

Great job, IGP. The rakyat are not dumb, and those who think so are dumber.

Fair&Just: Listen, listen, listen, I have quizzed him, so don’t disbelieve me, okay?

Hearty Malaysian: Khalid, you fell short of telling us what actions the police would take against the Perak mufti who propagated violence.

The public are still lacking in confidence in how police can cut down street crimes; we hardly see police presence on the street except those sitting in patrol cars.

How can they ensure laws and orders are enforced if they do not walk among the crowd? Can you control crime from a distance? You can’t combat street crime with ISA.

Perak mufti wants minister on Islam to resign

Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria has urged Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom to resign for failing to take action against a Christian leader who is insisting that Christians be allowed to use the word ‘Allah’ to refer to God.

“The court had already made a decision, what is he (Jamil) waiting for? If he is so weak to be a minister, then my suggestion is to resign,” he was quoted as saying in an Utusan Malaysia report.

In the report, Harussani accused Lawrence of challenging the court’s decision as well as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who is the head of Islam.

Police have quizzed mufti on ‘spill blood’ remark

Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria has already given a statement to police on his remark that it is permissable to spill the blood of those who protested in the New Year’s Eve anti-price hike rally.

“We have already called him. Any statement deemed to threaten (national safety) will be investigated.

“It is not true that only certain people can threaten security. We probe all. But you are only interested in certain people,” inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar told reporters this afternoon.

Mob intimidation at Church

Here’s what the Herald, published by the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur and ever minding its language had to say:

Ipoh :
Rumours that were circulated through SMSes nearly jeopardised the peace, harmony and religious freedom experienced by the Catholics of Ipoh. All was well when the Tamil Mass began at 7.OOam on Sunday, November 5, 2006. However by 7.30 am, assistant parish priest Fr Dominic Santhiyagu had realised (from the altar) the mounting presence of police personnel and patrol cars on the main road. The crowd had swelled outside and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) person¬nel and trucks had arrived and taken up their posi¬tions along the main road in front of the church. Soon the crowd on the right side of the church started shouting, “Kalau Mansor masuk, bakar bangunan ini! ” (
If Mansor goes in, burn the building).

What had brought this mass of people from a different religious faith to the steps of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Ipoh on the day of a First Holy Communion celebration? The SMSes might shed some light.

Cops accused of bias against Herald editor

FMT Staff | January 8, 2014

Tony Pua notes that no sedition probe has started against Perak mufti.

PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua today accused the police of applying a double standard in their investigation of Herald editor Father Lawrence Andrew for alleged sedition.

He said Andrew’s allegedly seditious statement was not as provocative as those uttered in recent weeks by other religious leaders, such as Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria, whom police have left alone.

Police have interrogated Andrew over a news report which quoted him as saying that churches in Selangor would continue to call God Allah.

Speaking to reporters after the interrogation, he said he told police he was citing from the Federal Constitution in the interview that produced the offending report.

Harussani, in a Jan 3 comment on a public rally against subsidy reductions and price hikes, declared that Islam permitted the killing of such demonstrators. He has since affirmed that he stood by that statement.

Harussani had used the Islamic legal term “bughah”, which is often interpreted as an armed revolt against a just ruler.

Pua said Harussani was using religion to justify violence and murder against peaceful protestors.

“Who will take responsibility if any of the protestors were killed as a result of the mufti’s irresponsible edict?” he said.

“Despite the outrageous and indisputably seditious call made by Harussani, not a single finger has been lifted to chastise, much less investigate, the Perak Mufti for his statement.”

Harussani: I wasn’t paid to criticise protesters

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria has rubbished allegations that he was being paid to demonise those protesting prike hikes who had demonstrated on New Year’s Eve.

“I do not care about certain groups who accuse me of receiving money to criticise them … In Islam, it is not good that we are suspicious of others,” he was quoted as saying in a Berita Harian report today.

“I just said anyone who gathers with the intention of toppling the government, they can be considered as ‘Bughah’.

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria

For people with a short memory, here are some reminders of the ‘quality’ of the man.

Malaysiakini.com – Perak mufti ticked off over SMS rumours

Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria came under further criticism today for spreading rumours about a church in Ipoh conducting a baptism ceremony for Muslims which could have resulted in an ugly religious clash.

Women’s group Sister in Islam (SIS) slammed the controversial mufti for failing to ‘“learn from past experiences the danger of disseminating unverified information especially regarding contentious issues such as apostasy’.

“This is not the first time the mufti has made careless statements and allegations, said SIS programme manager Norhayati Kaprawi.

She cited a number of previous statements made by the mufti, including in February where Harussani claimed that between 100,000 and 250,000 Muslims had renounced Islam.

“To date, he has not been able to substantiate these claims, except to merely state that these were obtained from reliable sources.

Harussani was implicated in an SMS (short messaging system) claiming that the mufti had mentioned about the conversion ceremony at a meeting with a group of Muslim NGOs at the state mosque.

As a result, about 1,000 Muslims gathered at the Ipoh church in Jalan Silibin on Nov 5 to protest against the conversion, forcing the police to be called in.

The angry protesters had initially refused to disperse despite warnings from the police, who then brought in a team from the Federal Reserve Unit to control the crowd.

It was revealed that the church was not converting Muslims but was instead holding the first holy communion service for 98 Catholic children.

Catholic lawyers express grave concern

In Penang, a group of Catholic lawyers also expressed their “grave concern” over the incident.

“We find it most alarming that the entire protest was a result of the circulation of a text message which had falsely claimed that the church planned to baptise and convert Muslims, said Bernard Bhar, chairman of the Catholic Lawyers of the Diocese of Penang.

“The SMS was mischievous, irresponsible and very damaging to inter-religious relations in general, and the relationship between Muslims and Christians in particular.

“As a religious leader, the mufti should have acted with greater responsibility by verifying the authenticity of the facts with the church before making any such announcement.

However, Bhar said that the rumour-mongering culprits should not be charged under the Internal Security Act (ISA) “or under any other draconian laws which deny them of their rights to a fair trial”.

“There are sufficient alternative laws under which they could be prosecuted in the court of law, he stressed.

SIS concurred and said that it disagreed with the inspector-general of police and the deputy internal security minister on the possible use of the ISA against those responsible for disseminating such messages.

PETALING JAYA (July 28, 2013): The call by Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria to amend Articles 3, 5, and 11 of the Federal Constitution, which relate to freedom of religion and personal liberty, runs contrary to basic human rights, say legal and religious experts.
“What he is trying to do is to exclude Muslims from constitutional protection (as Muslims would only be governed by syariah law),” Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights coordinator Edmund Bon told theSun today.
Harussani made his comments following the Ipoh High Court’s landmark ruling last Thursday that the 2009 conversion to Islam of the three children of M. Indira Gandhi, a 38-year-old kindergarten teacher, was unconstitutional as it contravened Articles 3, 5 and 11 of the Federal Constitution.
“If a spouse takes the kids and converts them, there would be absolutely no way for the non-Muslim spouse to challenge the conversion, even if it is illegal under syariah law,” said Bon.
He said amending Articles 3, 5 and 11 would create two legal classes in Malaysia – Muslims and non-Muslims.
“These amendments would be particularly discriminatory to Muslims as they would have no constitutional protection whatsoever of their personal liberties,” he added.
He said Malaysians would then see the syariah courts and Islamic authorities applying syariah law in a manner wholly inconsistent with human rights.

Perak mufti supports Obedient Wives Club

IPOH: Perak mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria has given his backing to the Obedient Wives Club, which offers “sex lessons” to help women keep their husbands.

Harussani, who recently banned the poco poco dance in Perak, said women needed to be reminded of their roles and responsibilities to their husbands.

“The younger generation is too absorbed in cultures that are not their own. Wives must be very obedient to their husbands.

“However, in Islam, the wife can go against her husband if what he does is not according to the religion,” he said, calling for more such clubs to be set up throughout the country as a way to counter social ills.

Harussani stands by ‘bughah’ remark

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria remain adamant in labelling participants of the protest organised by Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun) as “bughah (rebels)” and can be killed by Muslims.
In an interview published by Malay daily Sinar Harian today, the mufti said he would not bow to pressure to resign.
“I will not resign and bow to all those condemnations. I will continue to fight for Islam and I do not fear any malicious statements thrown against me,” he was quoted saying.
He said his controversial statement is based on a verse 9 of the Quran’s surah al-Hujurat, which calls on factions amongst believers to make peace with one another, but fight factions that are oppressing another.

Mufti’s ‘bloodshed’ remark draws ridicule

Not Confused: Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria’s latest statements seem to underline why Islam has such a bad name. He has zero common sense, just a rabid mouth. His comments beggar belief in the 21st century.

He called for the revocation of citizenship for those who protested against the government and the price hikes. How on earth can a Malaysian citizen, born and bred here, regardless of race, have his or her citizenship revoked? Where should they go?

How can anyone with such a warped and ignorant mind be allowed to speak on behalf of Islam? I am speechless.

Ayush: Mandatory death penalty for 50,000 protesters? This is a massacre! It will go down into the Guinness Book of Record as the ‘best fatwa’ of the 21st century.

Ferdtan: Harussani, though the protesters at Dataran Merdeka are multi-racial but the majority of them are young brave Malay youths. So are you calling them to be ‘killed’?

Where is our eloquent Raja Muda of Perak who speaks on issues like on good governance and democracy? What is your view on your state mufti? Action speaks louder than words. Please show us your mettle.

1Melayu: Harussani is on Umno’s payroll and needs to show that he is the champion of the Umno regime.

When people like this in Umno call for the killing of others, it is not seditious. Umno’s PDRM is clearly a force serving Umno and nothing else.

Mufti defends ‘protesters can be killed’ suggestion

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria remains defiant despite coming under severe criticism over his labelling of anti-price hike protesters as “bughah” whose blood, he argued, could be shed.

“I spoke the truth, not to seek publicity and I will not budge from my position,” he said in a Berita Harian report today.

According to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, the term “bughah” refers to people who rebel against a just government.

“Even though I knew I would be condemned, it is my responsibility to remind Muslims, especially those who have been incited by kafirs (infidels).

“The kafirs did not attend the illegal gathering. Until when do Muslims want to be fooled?” Harussani (left) was quoted as saying.

He was referring to the New Year’s eve rally where more than 10,000 people – many of whom are Malays – gathered at Dataran Merdeka to protest the rise in cost of living due to price hikes initiated by the government.

Of mad mullahs and mangled muftis

‘What a way to start the new year’

And more ridiculous, as recent as yesterday, why are we reading yet another reiteration of a fatwa by this mufti from Perak who has nothing better to do than vomit nonsensical declaration that those who protested against the ridiculous price hikes can be called traitors and should be waged war against in the form of ‘jihad fisabilillah’ (holy war in the name of Allah).

The protesters were not armed with bombs strapped on their waist, were they? The protesters weren’t running around amuck-latah carrying machetes, parang panjang, kapak siam or machine guns, were they?

Weren’t they armed with anything dangerous except the call for the government not to further trample them with more hardships so that few in power can enjoy celebrating New Year with more champagne worth thousands of dollars to blow just that one night?

Isn’t jihad supposed to be about speaking truth to power and wishing for a peaceful change through such a peaceful and legal gathering as what was demonstrated on the night the rakyat came down – to ‘turun and turn’ so that everything, prices and people intoxicated with power will bow down to the will of the rakyat?

Isn’t that what Islam and all religions promoting the peaceful middle path call for?

What a mufti Perak has and what a way to force him to resign before he does any damage to Muslims too. But what will it take to force him to do that?

Perak mufti declares Dec 31 protesters ‘traitors’

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria has labeled those who protested on New Year’s eve at Dataran Merdeka as traitors to the country.

Labelling the participants “bughah” (term used to describe Muslims who fight against, or who are traitors to the country’s leaders), Harussani was reported in Berita Harian as saying that it was haram (forbidden) to have participated in the rally.

Training his sights to PAS leaders who participated in the rally, the Perak mufti said they failed to understand the Quran.

“In fact, all the protesters should be arrested for being traitors to the government and accordingly in Islam, bloodshed is permitted on the bughah (protesters),” Harussani (left) said.

Harussani then urged authorities not to be lenient against the rally-goers, as he said if the matter was not handled now, such actions would spread.

‘Revoke citizenship of Allah fatwa dissidents’

Several Islamic scholars including Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria have urged that those who question the fatwa, court decision and the Malay rulers on the ‘Allah’ matter should have their citizenship revoked.

Harussani and National Fatwa Council chairperson Abdul Shukor Hussin were quoted by Berita Harian as that saying stern action should be taken against those who question the matter.

Abdul Shukor wants the Sedition Act to be invoked against those who question the fatwa as it had been gazetted in Selangor, as he fears that if people continue to question it would result in unrest.
