Early Man: From Science to Art..

There is a significant difference between the science of evolution which deals with the changes that occur within a species, and the  theory of evolution which is a philosophy.

Studies of Early Man were influenced by the theory of evolution. That’s why Early Man is portrayed as being so similar to the Apes.

Evolutionary Embarrassment: Part of Famous ‘Ape-Man’ Skeleton Actually Came from Baboon

zzzz

SAN FRANCISCO – A team of scientists has announced that the famous “Lucy” skeleton, a specimen long heralded as proof of man’s evolutionary descent, likely includes at least one bone from a baboon.

Ever since its discovery in Ethiopia in 1974, the partial skeleton nicknamed “Lucy” has been touted by evolutionists as proof that humans evolved from ape-like ancestors. Eager to show evidence for Darwin’s theory, evolutionists claim that Lucy was a Hominid—an ape-like primate that possessed the ability to walk upright, like modern humans.

Today, natural history museums frequently depict Lucy as a part ape, part human creature, with long arms, an erect posture, and a small brain. Evolutionists maintain that the skeleton, which is claimed to be 3.2 million years old, fills in crucial gaps in the human family tree.

However, many scientists, including those who believe in biblical creation, have long expressed skepticism toward the Lucy fossil. Sculptor and exhibit designer Doug Henderson wrote in a 2013 article for Answers in Genesis that depictions of Lucy are significantly influenced by biases and unfounded assumptions.

“Even though Lucy is fairly complete for a mammal fossil (47 of 207 bones found), the bones are mostly small fragments with many pieces missing,” Henderson wrote. “Other specimens have been found, but they are far more fragmentary. No matter how complete, all fossils must be interpreted. Some interpretation is always left to the imagination of the person doing the reconstruction.”

Last week, scientists announced that the famous skeleton includes at least one bone that likely came from a baboon. According to New Scientist, Gary Sawyer and Mike Smith at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, along with New York University’s Scott Williams, came to this conclusion after they analyzed the Lucy specimen and “noticed something odd.”

“Mike pointed out that one of the [vertebra] fragments, which no one, including me, had really paid close attention to, looked fairly small to fit with the rest of Lucy’s vertebral column,” Williams said.

The bone fragment’s size did not match up with the other pieces of the skeleton, the scientists concluded.

“It was just too small,” Williams said.

Williams then compared the bone fragment to the anatomies of other animals, noticing that it closely resembled baboon vertebrae.

“Baboons were a close match, both in shape and size,” Williams explained. “So we think we’ve solved this mystery. It seems that a fossil gelada baboon thoracic vertebra washed or was otherwise transported in the mix of Lucy’s remains.”

Scientists at the University of Southampton have spent four years examining more than 2,000 people who suffered cardiac arrests at 15 hospitals in the UK, US and Austria.

Of 2060 cardiac arrest patients studied, 330 survived and 140 said they had experienced some kind of awareness while being resuscitated.

First hint of ‘life after death’ in biggest ever scientific study

Death is a depressingly inevitable consequence of life, but now scientists believe they may have found some light at the end of the tunnel.

The largest ever medical study into near-death and out-of-body experiences has discovered that some awareness may continue even after the brain has shut down completely.

It is a controversial subject which has, until recently, been treated with widespread scepticism.

But scientists at the University of Southampton have spent four years examining more than 2,000 people who suffered cardiac arrests at 15 hospitals in the UK, US and Austria.

And they found that nearly 40 per cent of people who survived described some kind of ‘awareness’ during the time when they were clinically dead before their hearts were restarted.

One man even recalled leaving his body entirely and watching his resuscitation from the corner of the room.

Despite being unconscious and ‘dead’ for three minutes, the 57-year-old social worker from Southampton, recounted the actions of the nursing staff in detail and described the sound of the machines.

“We know the brain can’t function when the heart has stopped beating,” said Dr Sam Parnia, a former research fellow at Southampton University, now at the State University of New York, who led the study.

“But in this case, conscious awareness appears to have continued for up to three minutes into the period when the heart wasn’t beating, even though the brain typically shuts down within 20-30 seconds after the heart has stopped.

“The man described everything that had happened in the room, but importantly, he heard two bleeps from a machine that makes a noise at three minute intervals. So we could time how long the experienced lasted for.

“He seemed very credible and everything that he said had happened to him had actually happened.”

A RECENT STUDY REVEALS THAT BELIEF IN EVOLUTION HAS FALLEN.

There are about 300 million Americans. As only 1983 people were surveyed by telephone, don’t take the results as FACT of what Americans believe.

The study probably tells us more about how to lie with statistics than the beliefs of Americans.

A third of Americans don’t believe in evolution, Pew study finds

January 01, 2014

ONE third of Americans utterly reject the theory of evolution and believe instead that humans “have existed in their present form since the beginning of time,” a new survey has found.

About a quarter of Americans believe that evolution was guided by God while only 32 per cent of those surveyed believe that evolution is due to “natural processes such as natural selection”, the Pew Research Center found.

The broad results were little changed from a similar survey in 2009, but Pew found a drastically widening gap along party lines.

Some 54 per cent of Republicans and 64 per cent of Democrats said they believed in evolution in 2009.

That ten-point gap more than doubled in the latest survey, which found that only 43 per cent of Republicans believe in evolution while 67 per cent of Democrats said humans have evolved over time.

The views of political independents were essentially unchanged, with 65 per cent believing in evolution.

Evolution has long been a political issue in the United States, where science classes are a battleground between advocates of non-religious teachings in public schools and conservative Christians who push for curriculum that includes creationism or “intelligent design”.

Two thirds of white evangelical Protestants believe God created humans in their present form while 78 per cent of white “mainline” Protestants believe in evolution. Half of black Protestants believe God devised humans as they exist today.
Nearly seven in ten white non-Hispanic Catholics and 53 percent of Hispanic Catholics believe in evolution.

The results were drawn from a telephone survey of 1983 adults conducted March 21 through April 8 that has a margin of error of 3 per cent.

The following is an attempt by ONE PYSCHOLOGIST to explain what is happening.

Are the very mental shortcuts our brain has evolved for efficiency working against the acceptance of evolution?

IS evolution itself driving America’s growing rejection of modern biology? New studies suggest this very thing.

Today’s revelation that a quarter of the US population rejects the idea of evolution and instead believes we were created through intelligent intervention is nothing new.

The fact that only a third of us accept that “natural processes such as natural selection” are behind our existence has had science thinking for some time.

So why does the concept of evolution cause so much upset in an era overwhelmed with science – be it in medicine, transport, communication and calculation?

“Natural selection is like quantum physics … we might intellectually grasp it, with considerable effort, but it will never feel right to us,” writes the Yale psychologist Paul Bloom.

It’s about the nature of our brain. It’s an amazing device at finding new and successful ways to adapting to an ever-changing world – with the minimum of effort.

The brain has evolved, psychologists argue, to conserve its energy and speed up its processes through a series of “mental shortcuts”.

This “unwillingness” to expend mental energy may be behind the difficulty of accepting complex ideas such as evolution.
