Not Touch My Vife! Big Guy Fight in Store

China suffers from one of the worst gender imbalances in the world as families prefer male children.

As a result millions of men now cannot find Chinese brides — a key driver of trafficking, according to rights groups.

Brides for sale: Vietnamese women trafficked to China

When Kiab turned 16, her brother promised to take her to a party in a tourist town in northern Vietnam. Instead, he sold her to a Chinese family as a bride.

The ethnic Hmong teenager spent nearly a month in China until she was able to escape her new husband, seek help from local police and return to Vietnam.

“My brother is no longer a human being in my eyes — he sold his own sister to China,” Kiab, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, told AFP at a shelter for trafficking victims in the Vietnamese border town Lao Cai.

Vulnerable women in countries close to China — not only Vietnam but also North Korea, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar — are being forced into marriages in the land of the one-child policy, experts say.

The Lao Cai shelter currently houses a dozen girls from various ethnic minority groups. All say they were tricked by relatives, friends or boyfriends and sold to Chinese men as brides.

– Tricked and sold –

Vietnamese girls are sold for up to $5,000 as brides or to brothels, said Michael Brosowski, founder and CEO of Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, which has rescued 71 trafficked women from China since 2007.

“The girls are tricked by people posing as boyfriends, or offering jobs. Those people do this very deliberately, and for nothing other than greed and a lack of human empathy,” he added.

It is likely that many of the girls end up working in brothels, but due to the stigma of being a sex worker they will usually report they were forced into marriage.

In northern Vietnam, trafficking has become so acute that communities say they are living in fear.

Vendors, activists face off at China dog meat festival

People sell dog meat in a market in Yulin, south China’s Guangxi region, on June 18, 2014

Animal lovers provoked an angry backlash from residents of a Chinese city after protesting a controversial festival Saturday in which locals celebrate the summer solstice by eating dog meat, witnesses and media said.

Activists have flocked for weeks to Yulin, in the southwestern region of Guangxi, to protest the local custom of eating dog — particularly on the summer solstice, which fell Saturday, in an event dubbed the “dog meat festival”.

But their efforts have backfired. “A lot of people have said, ‘I don’t eat dog meat, but just because of these idiots, I will go buy dog meat to eat and to give to my friends to eat,” a 50-year-old animal rights advocate visiting Yulin told AFP by phone.

The activist, who asked not to be named due to sensitivities around the issue, added that outside criticism had “created a sense of confrontation”.

“These outsiders coming in as dog lovers are just troublemakers coming to Yulin to create unrest,” he cited locals as saying.

Yulin residents traditionally buy live dogs on the morning of the solstice, then gather for dinner to eat the dog meat, the activist, from the southern city of Shenzhen, said.

A day earlier, dog sellers had goaded activists by holding up their animals and urging animal lovers to buy — and rescue — them, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Saturday.

It also cited residents as saying: “I didn’t eat dog meat before, but after they yelled at Yuliners the way they have, this year I will definitely celebrate the dog meat festival.”

An animal rights activist who visited Yulin last week told AFP efforts to change minds had proved futile.

College Beauty Contest In Hubei Has Some Very Unique, Nipple-Specific Requirements

Somewhere down the line, I’m not sure when or where, beauty pageants stopped being about who was the most physically attractive and instead, in theory, about who was the most all-around beautiful, taking into account personality, skills, and one’s sincerity in wishing for world peace.

A beauty contest in Hubei has recently declared: Screw that — beauty pageants should be about the prettiest, damnit, and here’s how we’re going to do it:

1. The space between the eyes and mouth should be 36 percent of the face’s total length.

2. The height of the individual should be 7.1 times the height of her head.

And the one that really has people talking:

3. The distance between the two nipples should be at least 20 centimeters.

Uproar in China after woman bashed to death at McDonald’s as customers watch

MANY people in China are in uproar after a young mother was bashed to death in a busy McDonald’s restaurant, while dozens of customers watched without helping her, in an attack police have tentatively linked to a fringe sect.

The attack happened in the Shandong province, in China’s far east, on Thursday night when the woman was set upon by a family of six.

There is speculation in China today that the group are part of a religious cult trying to recruit members in Zhaoyuan city in Shandong, which has been known in the past as the home of some sectarian organisations.

The group of six have been arrested and have allegedly pleaded guilty to murder.

The Zhaoyuan police posted on its microblog that it was believed the attackers belonged to a group called the “All Powerful Spirits” while CCTV, the state broadcaster, said religious material had been found near the scene of the crime

Chinese police have detained six people for beating to death a woman at a McDonald’s restaurant who refused to disclose her phone number, accusing them of being members of a religious cult, state media said Saturday.

The woman became involved in an argument with the six people, including a juvenile, who then allegedly beat her on Wednesday evening in Zhaoyuan city in Shandong province, the official Xinhua news agency said.

They were seeking to recruit the woman into a “evil cult” called Quannengshen, it said. The group, which can be translated as Church of Almighty God, is a doomsday cult which was outlawed by the government in the mid-1990s, according to media reports.

Photos circulating on social media showed the woman wearing a white shirt and blue trousers lying face down in a pool of blood. She died after being taken to hospital, Xinhua said.

Mummies’ Milk: World’s Oldest Cheese Found in China

A mummy found with hunks of ancient cheese, shown in the inset.

Yellow chunks of the world’s oldest “cheese” may have been discovered on the bodies of mummies buried in China’s Taklamakan Desert.

The mummies, which are each about 3,800 years old, were buried with hunks of the dairy treat, presumably a tasty snack for the buried to enjoy in the afterlife. This particular cheese was also simple to make, nutritious and easily digestible, according to the study.

“Despite being extraordinary simple, it possessed the necessary qualities for supporting the economic expansion of ruminant animal herding into Eastern Eurasia,” the authors write in the paper, which was published online Feb. 18 in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

China’s 245 million migrant workers – twice the entire population of Japan – generally have to travel on jam-packed trains or buses to get to their hometown to see their families for the Lunar New Year.

The two-wheeled journeys reflect huge growth in motorcycle ownership in China, which for years has been both the world’s largest producer and consumer of the vehicles. More than 23 million were sold in 2013 according to industry figures.

Pet Owners Brace for Chinese New Year Fireworks

A man hauls discarded boxes of fireworks in Beijing during the Chinese New Year in 2011.Keith Bedford for The New York Times A man hauls discarded boxes of fireworks in Beijing during the Chinese New Year in 2011.

The explosions of Lunar New Year fireworks are considered a sound of celebration and a deterrent to evil spirits. But they also are responsible for injuries and fires and cause air quality, which is already poor in many parts of China, to worsen.

Perhaps the worst off are pets that can be terrified by the two-week pyrotechnic barrage and the sound of powerful detonations at almost all hours of the day.

“Many concerned pet owners come with this problem,” said Mary Peng, co-founder and chief executive of the International Center for Veterinary Services in Beijing. “They will be like, ‘My dog is scared. What can I do?’ ”

Dogs seem to be more bothered than cats, she said, and the canine victims can be of any breed or size. “I’ve seen large dogs that are so frightened that they lose their bladder control, and I’ve seen smaller ones who just can’t care less,” said Ms. Peng. “It’s a matter of personality.”

Miss Hong Kong 2013 contestant embroiled in sex tape scandal

A sex video allegedly featuring a contestant in this year’s Miss Hong Kong 2013 beauty pageant has gone viral, attracting the attention of Hong Kong media outlets.

According to Chinese reports, the video first came under media scrutiny in mid-September this year. The video was circulated on the Internet and some speculated that it might be Miss Peggy Tsui, a 26-year-old model who took part in the pageant this year but did not win.

The 8 minute and 26 second video appears to have been filmed by the man in the act using a mobile phone. A Hong Kong online video provider reported that the woman takes occasional glances at the camera, apparently aware that she is being filmed.

The video is without audio, and the woman’s face can be seen clearly in the video but the man’s face remains hidden. reported that during the Miss Hong Kong 2013 pageant, Tsui was reported to have started dating when she was 12 to 13 years old, and to have modelled in several car shows.

The 163cm-tall beauty refuted the sex tape reports, saying that she has only been in five relationships and does not engage in casual flings.

BEIJING (AFP) – Don’t wear high heels while driving. Make sure you release the handbrake before setting off. And don’t panic if you suddenly realise you’re going the wrong way.

Those are some of the suggestions given by the Beijing police department to women drivers in a series of microblog postings that have sparked a backlash among Chinese Internet users who say the tips are sexually discriminatory.

Women drivers, the posting continues, often discover that “when they’re driving by themselves, they’re not able to find the way to their destination, even if they’ve been there many times”.

Web users responded with anger at what they condemned as sexual discrimination on an account maintained by the authorities.

“Surely this official microblog is planning to devote its next postings to tips for male drivers?” one user asked.

While trying to convey the message that people should unite and care for each other, he made headlines when he said, “I shouldn’t say this, but sometimes I really want to see some countries have a disaster coming, either big tsunami or big earthquake.”

The actor stated that politicians tend to get into conflicts and start wars with each other when there is nothing for them to do, adding, “It seems that only when disasters such as tsunamis and major earthquakes strike that we get to witness the rest of the world rushing to a particular country’s aid.”

His comments quickly became a source of mockery by the internet, with several netizens saying that Jackie Chan himself is a “huge disaster”.

This is a photo taken on 10 August 2013 when we were in Beijing. It was considered quite a fine day, with little smog.

The manager for U.S. jazz singer Patti Austen, meanwhile, said the singer had cancelled a concert in Beijing because of an asthma attack likely linked to pollution.

Drunken Chinese Pose for Photo Next to Dead Body

A photograph of two Chinese men smiling next to the body of a car crash victim was circulated online, triggering angry reactions from netizens.

Two Chinese men posed next to the body of a car crash victim in Shaanxi Province. One was tracked down by a reporter, and claimed not to remember the incident because they were drunk at the time. (

The deceased was thought to be a local homeless man. He was run over on Sept. 30 in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. Locals had covered the corpse with a sheet.

A blogger posted a photo of the dead body that night, complaining that no one had not arrived to deal with the situation. Later, another netizen added: “Before the authorities arrived at the scene, two young men posed in front of the corpse and took a picture with big smiles.”

Epic Highway Fail in China

The Daily Mail reports that officials in Xi’an, the capital of China’s Shaanxi province, had no choice but to cut a highway in half after accidentally building a block of flats right in its path, resulting in what you see above.

Road construction workers reportedly ended up shrinking the eight-lane expressway into four, leaving frustrated residents stuck in the middle of a busy road that has now been branded a waste of time and money, since the obstruction has done little for the rush hour problem it was supposed to resolve.

HK woman tells boyfriend to kneel, then slaps him 14 times in public

A video recording of a Hong Kong man being repeatedly slapped by his girlfriend in public has gone viral over the Internet.

In the video, the young man can be seen kneeling down in front of two women. One of the women is heard yelling at him in the Cantonese dialect, accusing him of inviting another woman home with him.

For most of the argument, she can be seen grabbing his hair and slapping him. The video shows her slapping him at least 14 times in just 5 minutes.

No nose-picking: China chides its ‘unruly’ tourists

Chinese tourists should not pick their noses in public, pee in pools or steal airplane life jackets, China’s image-conscious authorities have warned in a handbook in their latest effort to counter unruly behaviour.

The National Tourism Administration publicised its 64-page Guidebook for Civilised Tourism — with illustrations to accompany its list of dos and don’ts — on its website ahead of a “Golden Week” public holiday that started on October 1.

A mainland Chinese woman who in February had her son relieve himself in a bottle in a crowded Hong Kong restaurant sparked an outpouring of anger online, with some locals deriding mainlanders as “locusts”.

Travellers should not drink soup straight from the bowl or make slurping sounds when eating noodles, it warned.

And after taking a flight they must leave the life jackets underneath their seats, the rulebook said, explaining that “if a dangerous situation arises then someone else will not have a life jacket”.

Beastly 5-Kilogram Rat Caught In Central China, Allegedly Eaten

By October 2, 2013 1:33 am

The Hunan-based Sanxiang Metropolis Daily brings us this picture of a 5.1-kilogram, 90-centimeter-long (nearly a meter!) rat that you just might be seeing in your nightmares.

On the afternoon of September 25, villagers in Shaoyang, Hunan province found this beast diving for fish in a pond. Villagers reportedly had been on the lookout because they were routinely losing fish and didn’t know why.

They saw two ginormous rats and managed to capture and at least the one above.

Some villagers have reportedly speculated that this freakish creature — “Godzilla rat,” as Want China Times puts it – may have been introduced from elsewhere (America was specifically cited, though who knows).

In the second-to-last paragraph, Sanxiang Metropolis Daily reports that a few villagers cooked the rat that same night and downed it with alcohol.

Pizza Hut Protest

Blind people across multiple Chinese cities turned out in front of Pizza Hut restaurants to protest against Pizza Hut’s latest online video.

The controversy stems from a dialogue between the two characters below, paired with the below image of a blind shrimp ball.

The male cartoon on the left says, “Do you know why the ball is rolling around everywhere? Because it’s a shrimp (blind) ball”.

In Chinese ‘shrimp’ is said in the same way as you would say blind. ‘Ball’ in this instance also has a subtle negative meaning. This is emphasized by an onscreen display of a shrimp ball, wearing sunglasses and holding a striped cane next to the characters “虾”(SHRIMP) “瞎”(BLIND).
