NAIROBI (AFP) – Owners of Kenya’s Westgate mall, closed after Somali Islamists massacred 67 people almost two years ago, vowed Tuesday it would be safe as journalists toured the mall ahead of its reopening.

The mall was badly damaged in the four-day seige in September 2013, when four gunmen from the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab walked into the upmarket mall, tossing grenades and killing shoppers and staff.

On Tuesday, painters were putting finishing touches to the inside of the mall, which is to set to reopen on Saturday.

In the mall’s main hall, where shoppers once played dead as gunmen stalked the corridors killing those they found, the stores appeared back to normal, missing only the shoppers that owners hope will return.

“Exactly 22 months ago we had one of the saddest days in Kenyan history,” Nairobi governor Evans Kidero told reporters outside the building, once one of the Kenyan capital’s most prestigious shopping locations.

“As a nation we cried, we mourned but… Westgate is back.”

President Barack Obama confirmed Friday that Godane was killed by the U.S. airstrike. The U.S. State Department declared al-Shabab a terrorist organization in February 2008. Godane was also known as Mukhtar Abu Zubeyr and was the spiritual leader of the al-Qaida-linked group. The U.S. had offered a reward of up to $7 million for information leading to his arrest. Godane had publicly claimed al-Shabab was responsible for last year’s deadly Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya, that left 67 people dead one year ago. Somalia’s government said Friday night that it has credible intelligence al-Shabab is planning attacks in retaliation for Godane’s death. In a televised speech, Gen. Khalif Ahmed Ereg, Somalia’s national security minister, said possible targets include medical and educational institutions. Ereg said the government is vigilant and its armed forces are prepared to prevent such attacks. The killing of Godane was a “delightful victory,” said Ereg. He called on militants still fighting for al-Shabab to surrender to get a “brighter” life from the government. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta Saturday thanked the U.S. for killing Godane, saying his death provides “a small measure of closure” for victims of the Westgate Mall attack. Kenyatta’s nephew and his fiance died in that attack, a year ago this month. Godane, who used a number of other aliases, led the planning and was responsible for the perpetration of the attack on Westgate, Kenyatta said. …

A British man arrested as he tried to fly out of Kenya after the Westgate massacre was allegedly carrying maps of the shopping complex on his laptop. The Daily Mail on Sunday understands from police sources that Sharif Ahmed Abdirizak, 35, initially refused to surrender his computer password. Eventually he revealed it was ‘colaad’, a Somali word for ‘enemy’, though he insisted he could not recall his mobile phone number. Along with the rest of his luggage, his computer was taken away by National Intelligence Service officers. They are said to have found a number of downloaded maps of the Westgate shopping centre, where 67 people were killed last week by gunmen from Somalia-based terrorist group Al Shabaab. Until now, the arrest has been downplayed by Britain, with High Commissioner in Nairobi Christian Turner describing it as ‘not of significant interest’ to the inquiry. But Abdirizak remains in custody and magistrates have given detectives a further 14 days to hold him under Kenya’s Anti-Terrorism Act.

The militants who led the attack on a Kenyan mall hired a shop there in the weeks leading up to the siege, senior security sources have told the BBC.

This gave them access to service lifts at Westgate enabling them to stockpile weapons and ammunition. Having pre-positioned weapons they were able to re-arm quickly and repel the security forces.

A police doctor scouring Nairobi’s Westgate mall for bodies after a four-day siege by Islamist gunmen that claimed dozens of lives has said victims were tortured before they died, according to a Kenyan newspaper. “Those are not allegations. Those are f****** truths,” the doctor, a forensics expert, told The Star newspaper. “They removed balls, eyes, ears, nose. They get your hand and sharpen it like a pencil then they tell you to write your name with the blood. They drive knives inside a child’s body. Actually, if you look at all the bodies, unless those ones that were escaping, fingers are cut by pliers, the noses are ripped by pliers.”

The information could not be independently verified, but William Pike, the British editor of The Star, said the reporters working on the story had been given similar accounts from other sources. “We have [the source] on a recording,” Mr Pike said. “He was talking very graphically, and he was very angry.”

NAIROBI (Sept 25, 2013): Explosive experts searched Wednesday for possible booby-traps in the wreckage of a Nairobi shopping mall after a four-day bloodbath by Islamist gunmen, as fears grew over the fate of dozens still missing. “They are checking for any potential explosive devices left behind,” a security source said, adding that specialist remote-controlled demining robots were on hand. An AFP reporter outside the bullet-riddled mall also saw teams of sniffer dogs, which will check not only for explosives, but for the grim expectation of the bodies of over 60 missing victims. President Uhuru Kenyatta announced late Tuesday the 80-hour siege was over, with the “immense” loss of 61 civilians and six members of the security forces. However, police said the current death toll was provisional, while the Kenyan Red Cross said 63 people were still listed as missing. Nairobi, Kenya (CNN) — Heavy gunfire sent aid workers and journalists scrambling outside Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Mall on Monday afternoon, more than an hour after a Kenyan government official said security forces had taken full control of the four-story building from terrorists.

It was unclear if any hostages remained inside the building, but authorities expect the number to be “very, very minimal,” if any remain, Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said at a news briefing.

Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group took dozens of people hostage after seizing the Westgate shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Saturday, killing at least 59 people. 15:30 GMT: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has sent a telegram of condolence to Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying Russia strongly condemns this act of terrorism, the Kremlin’s press-service reported. 15:14 GMT: Security forces have “a good chance” of neutralizing the attackers at the shopping mall, said Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta. “The criminals are now located in one place within the building. With the professionals on site, I assure Kenyans that we have as good a chance to successfully neutralize the terrorists as we can hope for,” he told reporters. Karani Nyemo was walking to his car with his two daughters when the shooting started. They began to run. There were short bursts of automatic rifle fire punctuated by grenade blasts. “They were throwing grenades like maize to chickens,” said the software engineer. He pushed his girls under the car as people around him were hit by bullets. One of my girls kept calling out to me, ‘I want to go’, but there was nothing I could do.” A grenade landed right next to his car, only a few feet from one of his daughters, Nyemo said, but it didn’t explode.

Minutes earlier two vehicles had screeched up outside the front of Westgate and a dozen gunmen, and at least one woman, jumped out. Jomo, who was in the outdoor car park opposite the centre saw 10 attackers split into two groups, one running up the steps and into the main pedestrian entrance. The other team opened fire and ran around to the vehicle entrance at the side of the building, hurling grenades. …

Shootout inside Nairobi’s Westgate centre ‘kills 20’

A gun battle inside a shopping centre in the Kenyan capital Nairobi has left at least 20 people dead, the Kenyan Red Cross says.

The gunmen attacked Westgate centre – one of the city’s most exclusive. Dozens of shoppers fled, several are still feared trapped inside. Some reports suggested it was an attempted robbery – but officials say it might be a “terrorist” attack. The Somali militant group al-Shabab had threatened to strike the centre.

They are opposed to Kenya sending troops to fight in Somalia.
