Chinese media slammed for making Bumi agenda a racial issue

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 19, 2013): Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today hit out at those Chinese newspapers which try to turn the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment agenda into a racial issue.

He said the action of these vernacular newspapers could adversely affect racial unity in the country which had been strongly established since a long time ago.

“We don’t want to see newspapers, particularly the Chinese newspapers, to create the impression that the government is ignoring the Chinese community with the launching of the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment Programmes by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak recently. It is not true.

Anisah Shukry | September 18, 2013

Ibrahim Ali says it is time to reward the Malays in a big way for voting Barisan Nasional into power again.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malay rights group Perkasa wants the government to pump in RM1.4 trillion to Bumiputeras so that it achieves a Gross National Income (GNI) of RM900 billion by 2020.

“Right now, the GNI of Bumiputeras is RM56 million. So to achieve RM900 billion by 2020, the government must provide funds worth RM1.4 trillion to Bumiputeras,” said Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali at a press conference here.

Set up a bank for bumis, gov’t told

The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) has urged the government to set up a bank specifically for bumiputeras with an initial fund of RM2 billion.

DPMM president Syed Ali Alattas made the proposal as he felt that middle class entrepreneurs were not provided for under the government’s recently unveiled Bumiputera Economic Empowerment Agenda.

“The proposal is to establish a Bumiputera bank with an initial RM2 billion capital, RM1 billion from the government and another RM1 billion from the Malays,” he told reporters.

‘Bumi Agenda against 1Malaysia spirit’

P Ramani | September 17, 2013

The Bumiputera agenda announced by the prime minister will work against the Malays by making dependent on government aid, says experts.

PETALING JAYA: The New Bumiputera Economic Empowerment Agenda will further make the community dependent on the government and hinder the spirit of the New Economic Model (NEM), said Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEA) CEO Wan Saiful Wan Jan.

Wan Saiful said the other programmes such as the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and Government Transformation programme (GTP) would be superseded by this new announcement by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak

“Before elections, he was championing for the 1Malaysia spirit through his transformation programme and now that he is back in power, a new set of direction has surfaced to empower the bumiputeras,” said Wan Saiful.

RAM Holdings Bhd group chief economist Dr Yeah Kim Leng said there should be other programmes to help the non-Bumiputeras to limit any repercussions.

Najib’s Bumi Agenda divisive, unnecessary

FMT | September 17, 2013

By Ong Kian Ming

Najib’s newly announced Bumiputera Agenda overturns the New Economic Model (NEM), the Economic Transformation Program (ETP) and the Government Transformation Program (GTP).

This agenda overturns nearly all of the key aspects of Najib’s transformation programs, namely the New Economic Model (NEM), the Economic Transformation Program (ETP) and the Government Transformation Program (GTP).

The strategy of the NEM was to use market friendly and transparent affirmative action programs that would focus on the bottom 40% of households in order to narrow disparities between the rich and the poor, the urban and the rural, the Bumiputera and the non-Bumiputera.

Najib’s Bumiputera Agenda makes no mention of targeting the bottom 40% that was a key focus of the NEM.

His announcement of the Bumiputera Agenda just two days prior to Malaysia Day is divisive, unnecessary and in the long-run damaging to the economic and social cohesion of the country.

Not right to focus on bumiputera alone, says PAS

It is not right for any economic aid to be chanelled to the bumiputera community alone, but rather, must be distributed equally across all races, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said today.

“It is not right to deliver aid under the name of bumiputera rights and leaving other races behind,” he said during a press conference at PAS headquarters today.

Abdul Hadi reiterated that PAS subscribes to the welfare state ideology where all races get equal aid depending on the necessity.

“It is understandable that the bumiputera community has the most amount of people who are being left behind (economically),” he said.

“But at the same time the concept has to be equal for all,” he added.

Not right to focus on bumiputera alone, says Hadi

“We must thoroughly examine how this policy will impact other races,” he said.

MCA to PM: GLCs don’t belong to just one race
2:20PM Sep 15, 2013

Amidst the cheers for Putrajaya’s new economic plan for the bumiputera community, MCA Youth today reminded the premier that government-linked companies (GLCs) should not set race-based targets because it is funded by all taxpayers.

“We are aware that today’s local GLCs have developed to where they are based on the resources from taxpayers of all ethnicity.

“Therefore, there should be no racial distinction in the performance of GLCs,” he said in a statement today,” said MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong in a press release today.

Mr Inclusive’ now a danger to unity, warns PKR

9:39AM Sep 15, 2013

Najib Abdul Razak who had touted himself as a prime minister for all, appears to have morphed into a threat to national unity, warns PKR vice president N Surendran.

This, he said in a statement today, became apparent after the premier announced a raft of race-based economic measures dubbed the ‘Bumiputera Economic Empowerment’ plan.

Describing this as the “worst Malaysia Day present”, Surendran (right) warned that Najib and his ruling coalition were threatening to set back the country’s development and encouraging racial division and disharmony.

“Najib and Umno/BN have become a positive danger to the unity, peace and prosperity of this country.

“This new racial economic plan is unreasonable, unlawful, unconstitutional and racist.

“Article 153 of the federal constitution which allows very specific and limited quotas for bumiputeras, does not permit wide-ranging race-based economic discrimination as set out in this new plan.

“The Bumiputera Economic Empowerment plan thus falls foul of Article 8 of the Federal Constitution and is blatantly discriminatory.

A new plan for all, or still just the cronies?

NEWS ANALYSIS BY THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER

September 15, 2013
Latest Update: September 15, 2013 08:26 pm

The party never ends for Umnoputras. Never. It is one continuous gorge at the buffet table, funded by Malaysian taxpayers.

Sure, it is couched in the language of a national agenda; to help Malaysia achieve the target of becoming a developed nation by 2020; to help Malays obtain jobs, houses and narrow the wealth gap between have and have-nots. Blah, blah, blah.

But make no mistake, the only people who will be celebrating the Najib administration’s latest stab at affirmative action will be his Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, senators and their family members and business partners.

There are so many things wrong about the government’s decision to reward its loyal voters and constituents with this new Malay agenda.

One, the funds to be used by Najib and gang are from all taxpayers, not from the Umno endowment fund or from the annual Perkasa subscription. Chinese, Indians, Punjabis and others pay taxes and are entitled to reap the benefits when taxpayer funds are used for government projects.

It is dishonest for the government to say that non-Malays will not lose out under this new affirmative action programme. Of course, they will. You are essentially taking what Samy and Chua contributed into the common pool and only rewarding Abdul.

Two, the affirmative action plan for Malays and Bumiputeras assumes wrongly that Chinese and Indians and Punjabis and Eurasians are all living in the lap of luxury.

The troubling fact: the government that put the Malay community in this mess is now saying it has got the silver bullet.

Nothing irks intelligent people more than when government practises deceit. Yesterday was all about loading up the gravy train for the Umnoputras once again.

Umno’s no-end-in-sight policies

“Racism does not have a good track record. It’s been tried out for a long time and you’d think by now we’d want to put an end to it instead of putting it under new management.’

– Thomas Sowell

Prime Minister’s Najib’s announcement of his grand vision to perpetuate Umno hegemony through the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment initiative is merely the continuation of that old game, where the Malay polity is anesthetised with affirmative action programs to distract them from the reality that they are lagging behind and that this happened under the Umno watch.

The question remains that after decades of Umno rule, with affirmative action programs that has changed the face of the civil service and economic policies designed to “uplift” the Malay community; why is the Malay community in the state they are in now, always preoccupied by the other communities and engaged in war where the slice of the economic pie, which is growing smaller as the decades roll on, being the main source of contention?

Najib showers post-GE rewards on bumiputera

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today unveiled a slew of measures to prop up the bumiputera community, including requiring government-linked companies to set bumiputera participation targets.

“I want chief executive officers in all government-linked companies to set targets for bumiputera participation, including procurement by vendors,” he said to a hall of over 2,000 people at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam this morning.

“Based on the support by the Malays and bumiputera in the recent 13th general election, therefore today, the government will do a quantum leap to execute concrete and swift strategies and approaches.

“We call this the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment. All this is to safeguard Malays and bumiputera, from then, now and forevermore,” Najib said.
