The fire on Penang Hill.
GEORGE TOWN: The drought over the past few weeks triggered fires in three places at the peak of Penang Hill late Tuesday.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Azmi Tamat said the department was alerted to the fires by members of the public at 6pm.
“A team of 20 firemen from the Jalan Perak and Bagan Jermal stations were sent to two of the locations,” he said when contacted by Bernama on Wednesday.
Azmi said the fire fighters took more than 12 hours to extinguish the flames at the two locations as they were hampered by the lack of water.

Don’t transform Penang Hill into Disneyland, warns group over latest plans
November 19, 2013
A non-governmental organisation has raised concerns over proposed developments for the Penang Hill following the unveiling of the hill’s special area plan (SAP) last week.
Chant, or Citizens Awareness Chant Group is in support of the proposed cable car project to boost tourism, but cautioned that future developments should not transform the hill into a new “Disneyland” and alter its natural beauty.
“We question whether this cable car project proposed for the hill is just the beginning. What will come next? An integrated resort, Disneyland or another theme park?” asked Chant advisor Yan Lee yesterday.
Lee asked if the plan was for eco-tourism or for something else of an even larger scale, and pointed out that developers had long been eyeing the hill for development.
…
Last Thursday, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, in unveiling the SAP, stressed that developments will not hurt the ecologically-sensitive hill.
The SAP proposes two cable car lines up and down the hill from the Penang Municipal Park and Teluk Bahang, the upgrading of the Summit Centre, construction of chalets and a new hotel, redevelopment of Coolie Line, where a hawker pavilion and other tourism facilities are located, and the setting up of a gallery and information centre at the Gate House.
The hill, reaching 830 metres above sea level, is currently accessible with the RM73 million funicular train from the Air Itam station at the foot of the hill, as well as with jeep track next to the Penang Botanic Gardens.
…
Locals, stakeholders and NGOs have until December 11 to view and give their feedback on the SAP draft at the concourse area on level three in Komtar. The draft will also be displayed at the Penang Hill lower station, Mondays to Fridays, from 9am to 4.30pm. – November 18, 2013.

‘Penang Hill train doors should not be forced open’
GEORGE TOWN (Oct 20, 2013): A power outage due to a lightning strike may have disrupted the railway service at Penang Hill last Friday, but it was the panic of the passengers that delayed the service from resuming.
Penang Hill Development Corp general manager Dr Lawrence Khoo said forcing open the doors will only delay efforts to restart the service as overriding safety systems and protocol will initiate.
“It is like an elevator. The lift will stop if the door is forced open. It’s the same thing here,” he said when contacted.
…
Khoo also assured the public that the service has two back-up systems, which is sufficient to ensure continued operations for six hours after the initial failure.
“Even if the entire Penang has no power supply, we can still get people down,” he said.

Breakdown causes chaos on hill trains
GEORGE TOWN: Chaos reigned at the popular tourist spot at Penang Hill when the funicular train carrying some 80 tourists and Malaysians broke down on Friday night.
GEORGE TOWN: Chaos reigned at the popular tourist spot at Penang Hill when the funicular train carrying some 80 tourists and Malaysians broke down on Friday night.
Due to the poor ventilation in the two affected coaches, one of which was going uphill and the other downhill, some of the passengers started kicking and trying to break the glass window to get out.
A tourist from Malacca, Jalil Hassan, 44, said that it was total havoc in the train.
“The ventilation was poor and an Arab tourist attempted to break the glass panel to improve the air flow.
“We were only attended to by Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) staff after more than one hour of being stuck in the train.
…
At a press conference at the lower station yesterday, PHC general manager Dr Lawrence Khoo refuted claims that the passengers were stuck for more than an hour, claiming that it was only 10 minutes the most.
He said the power supply from the generator would have been switched on within 15 minutes if not for the passengers forcing the door open.
“This triggered the safety feature which blocks the electricity from being switched on.
“They also walked on the rail track, resulting in power supply failing to connect to the system.
“There were more than 80 passengers in the train.
“Our staff tried to calm them down but some panicked, and started kicking and trying to break the glass window,” he said.

Penang Hill Corp to seek explanation from TNB on power outage at Bukit Bendera
Speaking in a press conference here today, PHC general manager Dr Lawrence Khoo said the upper station experienced power supply failure, which also extended to the upper Penang Hill areas.
“This incident was beyond PHC’s control as the power breakdown was from TNB. We are still trying to get an explanation from TNB,” he said, adding that PHC was proud that the train system had recorded zero downtime or any disruption in service since the last quarter.
Khoo explained that as part of the system backup process, the train system shifted the standby power supply from the generator to continue operations, during which the train temporarily stopped transporting passenger

Penang Hill hit by 13 landslides
GEORGE TOWN: At least 13 locations in and around Penang Hill were hit by landslides following several days of downpour.
Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari said soil erosion had occurred on several areas along the jeep trail, causing trees to be uprooted.
“Fortunately, there were no casualties. We advise the public to practise extreme caution when within the affected areas.
“The road at KM2.1 is intact and vehicles can pass through. However, half the road at KM4 has been damaged,” he said.
Zairil added that repair works would take about four months because of logistical problems.

TANJONG BUNGAH
Meanwhile, residents in Tanjung Bungah are worried for their safety after several landslides also occurred there at around 11pm on Thursday.
A resident from a condominium, who was taking his usual morning walk in Solok Tanjung Bungah, said mounds of earth and a big boulder crashed down from the hill on Wednesday morning.
Another landslide occurred the following day.

Zairil said there have been worrying landslides at 13 locations around Penang Hill, and luckily there have been no casualties.

Massive landslides on Penang Hill
Relentless rains have caused massive landslides on Penang Hill in past week, worrying residents and trekkers.
GEORGE TOWN: Massive landslides and tree falls have occurred on Penang Hill for the past few days following heavy downpour in the state, posing a serious danger to residents, workers, hikers and jungle trekkers.
Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari disclosed that 13 landslides had been reported so far with three locations experiencing serious cases, namely KM2.1, KM2.5 (station 84) and KM4.0 along the jeep track leading from Botanical Gardens in Waterfall to the hilltop.
He said the three affected sections suffered massive earth collapse.
Speaking at a press conference here today, he cited that weak ailing trees and soil erosion were among reasons behind the landslides.
…
The damage at KM4.0 saw an area approximately 20 metres by 45 metres collapsing on Sept 7.
The Public Works Department (JKR) has temporarily widened that section by installing ductile pipes and sandbags to enable four-wheel drives to continue plying the route.
The affected area has now been temporarily covered with plastic sheets and an alternative route for water to flow from the hill and road has been created by JKR.
