Airline executive not fatally slashed, death was even more tragic

400 special policemen to tackle perception, or crime?
Enough with this garbage about PERCEPTION.
When the public complained continually that law and order had broken down, Putrajaya rolled out dubious figures more than a year ago to say that this was only a PERCEPTION.
The government’s love affair with PERCEPTION was recently taken to new heights by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said two special teams of policemen had been formed to tackle crime. They were to report directly to Bukit Aman and not to state or district police contingents.
“It was created to manage perception… that all cops are involved in bribery,” he said at a forum on Friday. That word PERCEPTION again.
…
There is no PERCEPTION problem. Malaysians know the score. They know that the brazen and wanton actions of gangs 04, 08 and what have you did not happen overnight. The crime bosses did not just wake up one day and have a fleet of Ferraris, mountains of cash to burn and 20,000 soldiers under them.
They were allowed to grow to the size of an army by politicians and cops who were either partners or who chose to look the other way.
But it is comforting that finally the Barisan Nasional government is coming to grips with the reality that our streets are no longer safe and that even living in a gated community with security guards is not the deterrent it used to be.

New police teams to clear image of graft-ridden force, says Zahid
Bukit Aman has formed two special squads to prevent crime nationally, an indirect admission that inaction by state and district police has led to the perception that “policemen are involved in bribery”.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had approved it, with 400 trained officers reporting directly to Bukit Aman, and not to state or district police contingents.
“It was created to manage perception… that all cops are involved in bribery,” he said in his speech at a forum titled A Review of Current Legislations and Other Measures to Fight Violent Crime Effectively, in Kuala Lumpur today.
Zahid explained that the move to appoint officers who report direct to Bukit Aman was a concerted effort to tackle public perception and rising crime.
“It is not that we do not trust the state or district police chiefs, we are looking at the gravity of the situation,” he added.
It was revealed that the newly formed squads were involved in the raid where five suspected gang members were shot in Penang on Monday.

AMPANG: Police arrested two men in a car and seized several paraphernalia believed to be used for robbery during the start of “Ops Cantas Khas” in Ukay Perdana, near here at 2am today.

The Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (Amended 1983) allows the police to detain suspects for 72 days to facilitate investigations, according to Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.
However, the police would still have to apply to the court for a detention order, he said in Penang today.
“Whatever violation under the Crime Prevention Act will be considered serious, and those involved can be punished heavily,” he said.
Khalid said the police have arrested 200 suspects nationwide under the Act under the ongoing crackdown on crime.
Asked if any of the suspects were ex-Emergency Ordinance detainees, he said he does not have the information yet.
“We will let you know later,” he said.

No more laws that restrict human rights, Najib promises
The government will not introduce laws which restrict human rights and liberties to rein in crime, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak promised.
The recent spate of violent crimes involving firearms has led to a growing chorus of demands from certain quarters for the government to reinstate preventive laws.
…
Mahathir, who is also one of Najib’s staunchest critics on the repeal of preventive laws, said the absence of preventive laws in Malaysia could result in a chaos similar to what was happening in Egypt.
However, Najib pointed out the problem with preventive detention is that the crime had not been committed yet.
“How do you arrest somebody if that person has not committed a crime? If it’s on a mere suspicion, it’s insufficient ground to arrest somebody on the basis of preventive laws.”
On July 26, Najib had announced that the government would be “mindful” of human rights when drafting new laws to fight crime.
