At 67 years old, she has been tear-gassed, kicked, sprayed with water cannon and now finally charged in court for taking part in illegal gatherings.

She faces a maximum six months in jail, a fine, or both, if convicted. But retired teacher Annie Ooi –  better known as Aunty Bersih – is not perturbed.

She is “fighting the government” for a “better tomorrow”, she says.

Ooi was among the 33 yesterday who were charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday for taking part in an illegal assembly and being a public nuisance.

“I don’t care what they do to me,” the frail woman told The Malaysian Insider.

“This is my first time here and I have no clue what is going to happen to me.”

She said being in court was quite daunting but she came in high spirits as there were 32 others jointly charged with her.

“If I can’t post bail, it would be an experience to see how it is in prison,” she said.

“To see the conditions and the way detainees are treated. It will surely be an experience.

“I am doing this for everyone’s children. And if you think that is wrong, then by all means, cuff me,” she added.

“See what they did to Teoh Beng Hock? What happened to Anwar?”

She said even if Anwar comes into power and he turns out to be as bad as the present government, she will also be protesting against him.

Ooi, who was an English teacher for more than 30 years, says she is not affiliated to any political party.

“All I want is to ensure a better tomorrow for our children,” added Auntie Bersih. – July 29, 2013.
