TOMAN FISHING CHALLENGE

The Bukit Merah Lakeside Resort is located about 90km from Ipoh, my hometown. The PLUS Highway allows you to get there in about an hour. There is not entrance fee.

Almost 400 people took part in this fishing challenge but apart from a few boys and two women, they were all men. Not unusual anywhere in the world…

The man holding the fishing rod caught a Giant Snakehead which weighed 1.66kg, considered small. Still, it was one of only four caught that day, and it won the first prize of RM10,000 (about US$3,300).

Time to remove the hook.

After being weighed, the fish is put away with other Giant Snakeheads caught earlier.

Only four Giant Snakehead were caught. The water was muddy due to rain overnight, so few came over from the clearer, greenish water farther out.

HER FIRST FISH EVER!

While the competition was going on, a woman decided to try her luck at fishing in this place.

This is a place for kids and mums! The deal is simple. You PAY them RM3 (almost US$1) for the first catfish you catch. The second one costs RM2. They keep the catfish, and then sell them to participants in the Giant Snakehead/Toman Fishing Challenge.
