End of the world: ‘Gangnam Style’?

by AFP
inSing.com – 18 December 2012 6:25 PM | Updated 20 December 2012 10:56 PM

SEOUL) If the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are about to descend on Earth, it seems one might be riding in from South Korea on an invisible steed to the tune of ‘Gangnam Style’.

South Korean social networks and websites have been buzzing in recent days over a prediction attributed to the 16th century French seer Nostradamus, that suggests the singer Psy is not the smiling, benign 34-year-old rapper he appears.

“From the calm morning, the end will come when of the dancing horse the number of circles will be nine,” reads the “prophecy” being circulated on websites, Facebook and Twitter.

An obvious fake, the quote has its origins in a spoof five-minute “documentary” posted on YouTube (see above) that has garnered up 1.5 million views and ties Nostradamus and Psy to the 21 December apocalypse prophesied by the Mayans.

The interpretation is compelling.

South Korea is known as “land of the morning calm”, the dancing horse is Psy’s signature dance style and the nine circles refer to the nine zeroes he will rack up when the ‘Gangnam Style’ video passes one billion YouTube views.

The number of views currently stands at nearly 972 million, and it could reach the billion mark on or around 21 December.

The “documentary” features an ominous narration that notes Psy’s “cultural domination over Western civilisation” with images of the singer dancing with Britney Spears and UN leader Ban Ki-moon.

“The evil that is enticing and looks cool will bend people’s minds with contagious behaviour,” it adds over footage of flash mobs doing the horse-riding dance in Paris and Rome.

The parody has gone down well in South Korea, with people perhaps looking for some light relief following a North Korean rocket launch last week and a presidential election on Wednesday.

“It’s hilarious … apparently circulating a silly rumour on the internet is a universal thing everywhere in the world,” tweeted one observer styled ‘d_ijk_stra’.

“Now Psy is getting linked to Nostradamus? It shows just how popular Psy has become!” added ‘fleschekim’.

Is the world comng to an end anywhere?

NOPE.

So far, so good….

New York, U.S. (midnight; 12:00 a.m. ET; GMT -5): From the ABC News newsroom in New York City, we can confirm the world here has not ended.

London, U.K. (midnight; 7 p.m. ET; GMT +0): ABC News’ Jeffrey Kofman reports: It did feel a bit like the end of the world here in London today. The rain was so heavy, the clouds so dark, the winter chill so penetrating that had Noah’s Ark sailed past I might have hitched a ride.  But all this has more to do with the time of the year than all the hyperventilating about the Mayan calendar.

MY FIRST ‘END OF THE WORLD’ PREDICTION

WHEN I WAS 10 YEARS OLD, I HEARD MY FIRST ‘END OF THE WORLD’ PREDICTION.  On the day the world was supposed to end, we were at school, at the afternoon session of primary school at St Michael’s Institution, Ipoh. At one point during recess, the sky darkened badly, and a classmate mentioned that the end of the world was about to come. He wept silently. I wondered if it would happen. Suddenly, the sun emerged from the clouds and the world was bright again.

We’re still here, aren’t we?

Come back tomorrow and read this. That is CERTAINTY that the world has not ended.

Will we live to see Christmas?

Stanley Koh | December 21, 2012

Malaysians have no doubt that the earth will spin on.

COMMENT

The world is supposed to end today (Friday), but Malaysians are generally keeping their cool, unlike many other people across the globe.

But Malaysians are happily nonchalant, to go by a random FMT survey. Some showed their enthusiasm for Dec 12 instead because of the nice figure it makes – 121212. There were reports of families or friends celebrating with expensive dinners and even expectant mothers asking their doctors to induce births. We can scarcely blame them. The same arrangement of 12s will not come around again for another 100 years.

Will we live to see Christmas?

Maya scholars and astronomers have dismissed the idea the world is on the brink of destruction but mystics and spiritual thrill-seekers have flocked to feed off Tikal’s energy.

Park guards said they had to throw out 13 naked women who were dancing and chanting around a fire pit near the temples last week.

Maya apocalypse and Star Wars collide

TIKAL (Guatemala): At the center of the rebel base where Luke Skywalker took off to destroy the Death Star and save his people from the clutches of Darth Vader, Guatemala is preparing for another momentous event: the end of an age for the Maya.

Deep inside the Guatemalan rainforest stand the ruins of the Maya temples that George Lucas used to film the planet Yavin 4 in the movie “Star Wars,” from where Skywalker and his sidekick Han Solo launched their attack on the Galactic Empire’s giant space station.

Once at the heart of a conquering civilization in its own right, the ancient city of Tikal is now a pilgrimage site for both hard-core Star Wars fans and enthusiasts of Maya culture eager to discover what exactly the modern interpretations of old lore portend.
……………

Local guides are expecting a rush of visitors this week and the Guatemalan government forecasts a record 235,000 foreign tourists for December. Hotels in Tikal are fully booked.

“There are passionate groups that come,” said tour guide Gamaliel Jimenez. “One group told me ‘If you don’t take us to where they filmed Star Wars, we aren’t going to hire you.’”

BEIJING (Dec 20, 2012): China has arrested nearly 1,000 people in a crackdown on a Christian sect that spread doomsday rumours and targeted communist rule, state media said Thursday ahead of the supposedly Mayan-foretold apocalypse.

The Christian-inspired group “Almighty God” has been accused of spreading doomsday rumours apparently linked to the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar and urging followers to slay the “red dragon” of communism, state media reports said.

Close to 1,000 followers of the sect, which state-run media labels an “evil cult” – the same description it applies to the banned Falun Gong group — have been held in a nationwide crackdown that began last week, state-run CCTV reported.

Police detained more than 350 Almighty God members in the southwestern province of Guizhou, while in the northwestern province of Qinghai more than 400 were held for “gathering unlawfully”, the Beijing Times reported.

Smaller numbers have been held in other areas across the country.

Five ways the world could end in 2012

NST

16 December 2012 | last updated at 08:03AM

DEC 21, 2012: The Mayan calendar will reach the end of a 394-year cycle called a “bak’tun”. This will be the 13th bak’tun, and according to some people, it will be the last. However, according to archaelogists, the ending of a bak’tun has nothing to do with the end of the world. ”The Mayans had a cyclical concept of time, not one that ever focused on the end of the world,” Mexican archaeologist Jose Romero said. Many archeologists have played down the doomsday prophecy and dismissed it as a misinterpretation. Despite this, there are those who continue to believe.
In Malaysia, there are those stocking up on food, “just in case”. Tan Choe Choe and Arman Ahmad speak to five local scientists who gave scenarios on how the world could end on Dec 21.
Supervolcano
“Some say the world will end in fire” is the famous opening line of a Robert Frost poem. True enough, many people believe that the world could end in a fantastic explosion of fire and ash from a massive supervolcano.

Asteroid
Another way Armageddon could happen is by an asteroid strike. This “method”, made famous by Bruce Willis in the film Armageddon, is probably the most favoured by Hollywood. The truth is, over the course of its history, Earth has been hit by countless asteroids. An asteroid that hit earth 65 million years ago was believed to have caused the extinction of dinosaurs.

Solar flares
Solar flares happen when the outer surface of the sun ejects charged particles into space. This can sometime cause a geomagnetic storm that can affect Earth, resulting in damage to electric and electronic equipment. In 1989, a Canadian power station was knocked out during a geomagnetic storm caused by the phenomena.

Big flood
In the Hollywood disaster flick 2012, a huge flood engulfed Earth, and only people who managed to get on gigantic arks managed to survive. But it is highly unlikely that a massive flood will swamp Earth anytime soon. This is not to say it is not impossible. However, such an event would happen over a period of perhaps hundreds, if not, thousands of years.Pandemic
Throughout history, pandemics have ravaged human populations, at one point rendering it to half their original size.Read more: 2012 will the world end – General – New Straits Times http://www.nst.com.my/nation/general/2012-will-the-world-end-1.186826#ixzz2FLyxR3

Tourists Flock to Mexico for Cultural Celebration as the Mayan Long Count Calendar Comes to an End – The Asheville Jung Center Explores the Culture of the Maya

PRWeb – Tue, Dec 11, 2012

Travel Weekly is reporting that the Yucatan region of Mexico is ripe with travelers looking to take place in Mayan celebration as the Long Count calendar comes to an end on December 21st, 2012. The Asheville Jung Center analyzes the Maya in a recent online Video Seminar.

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) December 11, 2012

With the Mayan Long Calendar coming to an end in 11 days some people are preparing for the end of the world while others are celebrating. Travel Weekly has reported that visitors of the Yucatan region of Mexico have been taking part in celebrations since December 21st of last year. According to experts, most Mayans do not believe that the world is actually ending but rather that there is a transition taking place to a “new beginning.”

Xcaret, Cancun’s eco-archaeological park, has had nightly festivities which will end with a grand finale on the 21st that will include the release of 104 Macaws into the sky. The Macaw is special the culture of the Maya in that they represent the Sun.

Party like a Mayan on Dec. 21 — the world isn’t coming to an end

The celebrations would have been worthy of an occasion that comes only once every 144,000 days: magnificent carvings depicting the gods, men walking on stilts entertaining crowds who were scoffing down copious amounts of tamales washed down by gallons of corn beer.

And all this partying, presided over by Mayan rulers satisfied their place in history was assured, as one cycle of the calendar linking their reigns back to the beginning of creation ended, and another cycle began.

Doomsday believers expecting, or perhaps hoping, the world will end Friday may be disappointed to learn the ancient Maya people were not expecting modern humans to be cowering in shelters on Dec. 21 or 23 (the date is disputed).

End of Mayan calender, or end of the world?

December 11, 2012
FEATURE

CANCUN (Mexico): Gonzalo Alvarez, who had just arrived in Cancun for two weeks of revelry linked to a major milestone in the Mayan calendar, seemed reasonably cheerful for a man about to be swallowed up by the Apocalypse.

“We came to party and to get ready for the beginning of a new era,” said the 39-year old architect, as he gathered his luggage from a baggage carousel at Cancun’s airport.
…………..

For many people in this region, Dec 21 will be a date for celebration.

The start of the new Mayan calendar also is big business in this region, with tourism offices in no fewer than five countries aggressively promoting the date.

Millions of tourists are expected to flood into the region for celebrations that will include fireworks, concerts and other spectacles held at more than three dozen archaeological sites.
………….

But while some prepare for the end of the Mayan calendar, others fear with trepidation the date will usher in the end of the world.

Some New Age spiritualists are convinced of a Dec 21 “doomsday” foretold by Mayan hieroglyphs – at least according to some interpretations.
……………

Indigenous leaders in Mexico, critical of the way the date is being commercialised, have convened a Mayan Peoples Council to focus more on the cultural significance of the new era.

“Like native cultures throughout the world, we want to maintain our cultural identity and preserve our ways of speaking, thinking and seeing the cosmos,” said Mary Coba, a tribal council representative.

“Above all, we want to realise the possibility that, wherever we live, we are respected, and live free of discrimination, violence and poverty.”

Cancun opens a new Mayan Museum ahead of (or despite) the ‘end of the world’

Famous Mexican resort destination Cancun opened this month a new Mayan Museum, weeks before a date on the ancient civilisation’s calendar that has been associated with the ‘end of the world.’
…………….

The ‘end of the world’ prediction has put the Mayan region, which include Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, in the spotlight. Thousands of tourists are expected to visit the area at the end of the year to either celebrate the new era or mourn the end of humanity. Earlier this year the government of Guatemala announced 95 per cent hotel occupancy in main Mayan spots such as Tikal.

Cancun receives around 12 million visitors annually; museum officials are predicting around 1 million visits a year.

Admission for adults is about US$5, with free entry for those under 12 and over 60.

Angkasa refutes ‘world in darkness on Dec 23’ rumour
  • Bernama
  • 2:22PM Nov 10, 2012

The Malaysian National Space Agency (Angkasa) today refuted the rumour circulating via social media claiming that the world will be in darkness for three days from Dec 23 during the alignment of the universe.

The report stated that during the cosmic alignment of the Sun, Earth and the centre of the galaxy, thick dust clouds would block the night-time view of the Milky Way, hence creating what was called a ‘total blackout’.

Angkasa, in a statement her today, said the rumour was not true as the Earth was 165 quadrillion miles from the Milky Way’s black hole, and thus the effect of the gravity would be too small.

“The thick dust clouds will block our view of the Milky Way, not blocking the Sun from being seen from the Earth,” the statement said.

The statement also said a video clip posted by the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) on YouTube, showing its officer, Charles F Bolden Jr, advising Nasa personnel on family preparedness in case of emergency, such as the 911 tragedy, hurricane and earthquake, had been abused by certain quarters.

“Those quarters had been manipulating the video by coming up with an article title saying that Nasa predicts a total blackout on earth on Dec 23, 24 and 25,” the statement said.

Maya demand an end to doomsday myth

AFP RelaxAFP Relax – 9 hours ago

Guatemala’s Mayan people accused the government and tour groups on Wednesday of perpetuating the myth that their calendar foresees the imminent end of the world for monetary gain.

“We are speaking out against deceit, lies and twisting of the truth, and turning us into folklore-for-profit. They are not telling the truth about time cycles,” charged Felipe Gomez, leader of the Maya alliance Oxlaljuj Ajpop.

Several films and documentaries have promoted the idea that the ancient Mayan calendar predicts that doomsday is less than two months away, on December 21, 2012.

The Culture Ministry is hosting a massive event in Guatemala City — which as many as 90,000 people are expected to attend — just in case the world actually does end, while tour groups are promoting doomsday-themed getaways.

Maya leader Gomez urged the Tourism Institute to rethink the doomsday celebration, which he criticized as a “show” that was disrespectful to Mayan culture.

Experts say that for the Maya, all that ends in 2012 is one of their calendar cycles, not the world.

Gomez’s group issued a statement saying that the new Maya time cycle simply “means there will be big changes on the personal, family and community level, so that there is harmony and balance between mankind and nature.”

Oxlajuj Ajpop is holding events it considers sacred in five cities to mark the event and Gomez said the Culture Ministry would be wise to throw its support behind their real celebrations.

We’re into August 2012. YES, AUGUST! The year has reached its 8th month. Four more months to go before 2012 ends…

(A) Here is the latest scare about 2012. It relates to December 23-25.

It says that there will be a GALACTIC ALIGNMENT!

The INTERESTING thing is that the report claims that NASA makes the prediction! (It is a FAKE NASA news release.)

Subject:  NASA predicts total blackout on 23-25 Dec 2012 during alignment of Universe
NASA predicts total blackout on 23-25 Dec 2012 during alignment of Universe.

US scientists predict Universe change, total blackout of planet for 3 days from Dec 23 2012.

It is not the end of the world, it is an alignment of the Universe, where the Sun and the earth will align for the first time.
The earth will shift from the current third dimension to zero dimension, then shift to the forth dimension. During this transition, the entire Universe will face a big change, and we will see a entire brand new world.
The 3 days blackout is predicted to happen on Dec 23, 24, 25….during this time, staying calm is most important, hug each other, pray pray pray, sleep for 3 nights…and those who survive will face a brand new world….for those not prepared, many will die because of fear.
Be happy, enjoy every moment now. Don’t worry, pray to God everday.
There is a lot of talk about what will happen in 2012, but many people don’t believe it, and don’t want to talk about it for fear of creating fear and panic. We don’t know what will happen, but it is worth listening to USA ‘s NASA talk about preparation.

Whether it’s true or not, better be prepared. No panic, stay calm, just pray.

The Great 2012 Doomsday Scare
11.09.09

This guest article on 2012 was written by E. C. Krupp, Director of Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles and is reprinted with permission from Sky & Telescope Magazine. The publisher and the author reserve all rights. All opinions are the author’s own.

The year 2012 is acting like a badly behaved celebrity. Frightful rumors and gossip are spreading. Already more than a half dozen books are marketing, to eager fans, astronomical fears about 2012 End Times. Opening in theaters on Friday, Nov. 13, will be 2012, a $200-million disaster movie that seems designed to break all records for disaster spectacles — with cracking continents, plunging asteroids, burning cities, and a tsunami throwing an aircraft carrier through the White House. The movie’s ominous slogan: “Find out the truth.” Two other major movies about the 2012 doomsday are also reported to be in the works.

Anyone who cruises the internet or all-night talk radio knows why. The ancient Maya of Mexico and Guatemala kept a calendar that is about to roll up the red carpet of time, swing the solar system into transcendental alignment with the heart of the Milky Way, and turn Earth into a bowling pin for a rogue planet heading down our alley for a strike.

None of it is true. People you know, however, are likely becoming a bit afraid that modern astronomy and Maya secrets are indeed conspiring to bring our doom. If people know you’re an astronomer, they will soon be asking you all about it.

Here is what you need to know.

………….

Galactic Guessing Games
Fast-forward to 1995. That year John Major Jenkins packaged several of these themes into Maya Cosmogenesis 2012. According to Jenkins, the winter-solstice point and the centerline of the Galaxy will line up exactly on Dec. 21. Arguing that this motivated the Maya to contrive the calendar to end on that date, Jenkins concludes that it will be “a tremendous transformation and opportunity for spiritual growth, a transition from one world age to another.”

…………

It’s almost a sidelight that the winter-solstice sun will never actually “eclipse” the galaxy’s true center, the pointlike radio source marking the Milky Way’s central black hole. Moreover, the winter-solstice sun won’t even pass closest to it on the sky for another 200 years.

………..

The Secret NASA Conspiracy
Some advocates for the 2012 catastrophe say that what will actually cause the devastation is an alignment of planets. There is no planet alignment on the winter solstice in 2012. (Blogger’s emphasis)

………….

Some insist, however, that a NASA conspiracy is in play and that Nibiru, looming in on the approach, can already be seen in broad daylight from the Southern Hemisphere. It was supposed to become visible from the Northern Hemisphere, too, by last May, but like a fickle blind date, it stood up those awaiting it.

2012 – A Scientific Reality Check
11.10.09

There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there… So here is the scientific reality on the celestial happenings in the year 2012.

Nibiru, a purported large object headed toward Earth, simply put – does not exist. There is no credible evidence – telescopic or otherwise – for this object’s existence. There is also no evidence of any kind for its gravitational affects upon bodies in our solar system.

I do however like the name Nibiru. If I ever get a pet goldflish (and I just may do that sometime in early 2013), Nibiru will be at the top of my list.

The Mayan calendar does not end in December 2012. Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period, but then – just as your calendar begins again on January 1 – another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

There are no credible predictions for worrisome astronomical events in 2012. The activity of the sun is cyclical with a period of roughly 11 years and the time of the next solar maximum is predicted to occur in the period 2010 – 2012. However, the Earth routinely experiences these periods of increased solar activity – for eons – without worrisome effects. The Earth’s magnetic field, which deflects charged particles from the sun, does reverse polarity on time scales of about 400,000 years but there is no evidence that a reversal, which takes thousands of years to occur, will begin in 2012. Even if this several thousand year-long magnetic field reversal were to begin, that would not affect the Earth’s rotation nor would it affect the direction of the Earth’s rotation axis… only Superman can do that.

The only important gravitational tugs experienced by the Earth are due to the moon and sun. There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and Sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The predictions of doomsday or dramatic changes on December 21, 2012 are all false. Incorrect doomsday predictions have taken place several times in each of the past several centuries. Readers should bear in mind what Carl Sagan noted several years ago; “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, the burden of proof is on the people making these claims. Where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and all the passionate, persistent and profitable assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won’t End?
12.22.11

Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won’t be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we’re frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 — hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then — just as your calendar begins again on January 1 — another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012.This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae related to this date have been proposed.

A New Age interpretation of this transition postulates that this date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era.

The New Age movement is a Western spiritual movement that developed in the second half of the 20th century. Its central precepts have been described as “drawing on both Eastern and Western spiritual and metaphysical traditions and then infusing them with influences from self-help and motivational psychology, holistic health, parapsychology, consciousness research and quantum physics.

Others suggest that the 2012 date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. Scenarios suggested for the end of the world include the arrival of the next solar maximum, or Earth’s collision with a black hole, passing asteroid or a planet called “Nibiru”.

December 2012 marks the conclusion of a b’ak’tun —a time period in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar which was used in Central America prior to the arrival of Europeans. Though the Long Count was most likely invented by the Olmec, it has become closely associated with the Maya civilization, whose classic period lasted from 250 to 900 AD. The writing system of the classic Maya has been substantially deciphered,  meaning that a corpus of their written and inscribed material has survived from before the European conquest.

bible-code-predictions Free supportive guide on 2012 end of days

This book isn’t about fantasy, it’s about reality.

People, who want to believe that their religion is going to save them, if it really is time for the “return of Jesus,” are not going to like this book. They are not going to like it, because it points out that Jesus is back. It explains that Jesus is the “Son of Man,” and that he returned to us just as the prophets Daniel and Ezekiel said he would.

People, who want to believe that their religion is going to save the world, if it really is time for the world to be saved, are not going to like this book. They are not going to like it, because it points out that “Chosen Ones of God” are not “gathered” until the events depicted as the “End of Days” have already begun. Anyone who refers to their selves as “Chosen Ones of God” before then are the “haughty ones,” that chose their selves.
