Representatives of Najib Abdul Razak have challenged the former premier’s detractors to a televised debate over the SRC International case.

In particular, Najib’s camp singled out Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.

“It appears that many in the public do not understand the facts of Najib’s SRC RM42 million case or have followed the court proceedings closely.

“We invite Ramkarpal to a televised open debate with a representative from our side on the subject of whether or not Najib deserves a pardon for the SRC case.

Is the aim of the CCP to make Singapore a “province” of China?

..

The ease of doing business and operating among foreign corporations and organizations via Singapore has emboldened Chinese companies and entities to use Singapore to reach out to others in the region and beyond.

“From this perspective, efforts have been made to cultivate relevant opinion makers and policy people. The idea is to have a China-friendly constituency.”

“In this endeavour, the pool of Chinese expatriates or naturalized Singapore citizens of Chinese origin is important. Initially, cultivation efforts revolved around business and some ancestry ties. This has now become more obvious and those inside this circle have become bolder and outgoing.”

“Pro-China and anti-America sentiments among Singaporean Chinese, especially those aged 70 and over, have become more pronounced, especially since Xi Jinping’s appeal to all ethnic Chinese including those overseas to love and be loyal to China.”

“Non-Chinese racial groups in Singapore have begun to react to this brazen display of Chinese chauvinism, albeit mostly private resentment thus far. This will grow out of hand if not contained. Imagine how our Chinese and Indians would react if there is an outbreak of hostilities between China and India?”

Chinese influence in Singapore has been a longstanding issue, with the Republic being the only country outside of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan with a majority ethnic Chinese population. Many social institutions from clan associations to some business advocacy groups have maintained ties with their mainland counterparts.

Chan’s participation in last year’s session of top advisory body Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, or CPPCC, was one of the key reasons he had caught the attention of the authorities.

IGP slams those calling Klang a ‘Colombian town’

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain refutes negative perception of criminal activity, saying the royal town in Selangor is peaceful and clean.

.

He said the negative perception of Klang was propagated by certain online portals after a robbery incident involving a real estate agent went viral.

“It is an isolated case. I want to clean this (Klang) town of the stigma and perception likening it to a Colombian (town),” he said.

Razarudin said several operations have been carried out in the past few weeks to stamp out criminal activities, and to get rid of the negative perception that some people have on Klang.

SINGAPORE — Five members of the public helped police subdue a man after he went around wielding a chopper and attacking people at Commonwealth Avenue, including at an HDB lift lobby, Margaret Drive Hawker Centre and a park connector.

The suspect, a 20-year-old man, will be charged in court on Monday for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, said police on Sunday (Feb 4).

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man acted alone in the incident on Saturday evening. There were no indications to suggest that it was an act of terror, said police.

The man was not known to the seven people he attacked. He allegedly attacked them with a knife, a chopper and his bare hands.

Two men, aged 76 and 40, as well as a six-year-old girl sustained minor injuries and were taken conscious to the hospital. They received outpatient treatment.

Another three men, aged 54, 21 and 20, as well as a 45-year-old woman sustained minor injuries and declined further medical assistance.

“The police would like to commend the five members of the public who detained the offender before the police arrival,” said AC Serene Chiu, commander of the Singapore Police Force’s Clementi Division. CNA

SINGAPORE: Police arrested a 20-year-old in the vicinity of Margaret Drive on Saturday (Feb 3) night after receiving a call alerting them to a man holding a chopper at 301 Commonwealth Avenue.

The man had already been detained by members of the public when officers arrived at the scene, said the police, who got the call at 7.05pm.

“Two men, aged 76 and 40, and a 6-year-old girl, who sustained minor injuries, were conveyed conscious to hospital,” said the police. Another three men, aged 54, 21 and 20, and a 45-year-old woman sustained minor injuries, but declined further medical assistance.

According to 8world, eyewitnesses said the incident unfolded across several locations, including the ground floor of the surrounding Housing Board flats at Margaret Drive and the hawker centre.

An 8world reporter at the scene found that the suspect had travelled around 900m, from Margaret Drive to Queens Peak condominium. Photos provided by witnesses showed a knife and blood stains at a stairway of one of the locations.

‘The situation has become appalling’: fake scientific papers push research credibility to crisis point

Last year, 10,000 sham papers had to be retracted by academic journals, but experts think this is just the tip of the iceberg

Tens of thousands of bogus research papers are being published in journals in an international scandal that is worsening every year, scientists have warned. Medical research is being compromised, drug development hindered and promising academic research jeopardised thanks to a global wave of sham science that is sweeping laboratories and universities.

Last year the annual number of papers retracted by research journals topped 10,000 for the first time. Most analysts believe the figure is only the tip of an iceberg of scientific fraud.

“The situation has become appalling,” said Professor Dorothy Bishop of Oxford University. “The level of publishing of fraudulent papers is creating serious problems for science. In many fields it is becoming difficult to build up a cumulative approach to a subject, because we lack a solid foundation of trustworthy findings. And it’s getting worse and worse.”

The startling rise in the publication of sham science papers has its roots in China, where young doctors and scientists seeking promotion were required to have published scientific papers. Shadow organisations – known as “paper mills” – began to supply fabricated work for publication in journals there.

The practice has since spread to India, Iran, Russia, former Soviet Union states and eastern Europe, with paper mills supplying fabricated studies to more and more journals as increasing numbers of young scientists try to boost their careers by claiming false research experience. In some cases, journal editors have been bribed to accept articles, while paper mills have managed to establish their own agents as guest editors who then allow reams of falsified work to be published.
.

The harm done by publishing poor or fabricated research is demonstrated by the anti-parasite drug ivermectin. Early laboratory studies indicated it could be used to treat Covid-19 and it was hailed as a miracle drug. However, it was later found these studies showed clear evidence of fraud, and medical authorities have refused to back it as a treatment for Covid.

“The trouble was, ivermectin was used by anti-vaxxers to say: ‘We don’t need vaccination because we have this wonder drug,’” said Jack Wilkinson at Manchester University. “But m
