Issuing statement in Chinese an ‘act of racism’, Perak Amanah tells Guan Eng
IPOH, June 25 — The use of Malaysia’s national language by a minister is a responsibility that should not to be taken lightly, Perak Amanah said today.
Its vice-chairman Muhaimin Sulam reminded Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng that being a minister is akin to being a national symbol, and that his recent actions reeked of racism.
“The official statement by the Finance Minister in Mandarin was an act of racism and was not sensitive,” he said in a statement issued here today.
“The voice and post as DAP secretary-general should be in line with the spirit and government’s philosophy that he is currently part of,” he added.

Chinese statement by finance minister ‘just an honest mistake’, says Dr M
PETALING JAYA, June 25 — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today he saw no issue with Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng publishing an official statement in Chinese, saying his Cabinet colleague had made “a mistake”.
“It was just a mistake, it wasn’t intentional,” he told a press conference here.
Lim came under fire from pro-Malay rights groups for issuing an official statement in three languages, including in Chinese.
The written statement contained policy updates on the Tun Razak Exchange project in three languages before attracting criticism from a Facebook page aligned to the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

KJ: Finance minister’s Mandarin statement defence unacceptable
Pointing out that it was not a personal or unofficial statement, he said the minister’s statement concerned official government matters and public interest.
The Umno vice-presidential candidate also recalled how Lim had responded by saying, “I am not Chinese, I am Malaysian” with regard to his appointment as finance minister.

Nothing wrong with Guan Eng going trilingual, says DAP rep
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s decision to issue a trilingual statement on Putrajaya’s policy towards the Tun Razak Exchange is not disrespectful to the national language, insists Tras assemblyperson Chow Yu Hui.
The accusations made by the Friends of BN Facebook page, Chow said, were “racist” in nature because the finance minister also included Bahasa Malaysia and English versions of the statement.
“So why is Lim accused of disrespecting Bahasa Malaysia as the national language? This is reflective of Umno’s longstanding tactics, although the facts are different altogether,” he said in a statement today.
According to Chow, the finance minister’s statement was meant for the Chinese language media because it would help prevent information from being lost in translation.

Guan Eng defends statement in Chinese, gets slammed by Mydin boss
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng tonight defended the move by his team to issue trilingual statements when he addressed the Tun Razak Exchange issue on Thursday, which included Malay, English and Chinese.
However, the Facebook statement he issued tonight to defend the trilingual statement was done purely in Chinese, eliciting a barrage of negative reactions from those who could not understand and had to rely on the social media platform’s translation tool.
Among those who criticised Lim was Mydin hypermarket boss Ameer Ali Mydin.
“All statements when released in Malaysia should first be in Bahasa Melayu, then English, then any other language (if) necessary.
“If you are in London, then I presume you will release it in English first then the translation can be (in) Bahasa/Mandarin/French etc.
“If you were in China, then at a press conference in China, release it in Mandarin first, then English etc.
“I would think that is more logical. We never had an issue before (in) the last 61 years, why create one now?” he said.
Mydin’s comment received the most reaction on Facebook, putting it at the top of the list.
“Are you a minister of the Malaysian government or Chinese government?
“Supposedly its a statement by the finance minister of Malaysia but it doesn’t use the national language so all can understand,” said Muadz Abu Hanzalah.

Statement by the minister of finance of Malaysia, LIM Guan Eng, in Kuala Lumpur on 24 June 2018:
________________________________________________________
Learning and use of Chinese / mother tongue are fundamental rights conferred and guaranteed by article 152 (1) of the federal constitution. In addition to the ministry of finance, other departments under the federal government should provide more space for use in Chinese, and officials must adapt and customary ministers to use Chinese language or other mother tongue except in Mandarin and English.
________________________________________________________
Recently, due to a Chinese version of a Chinese version of the international trade centre in TRX, TRX, I was strongly condemned by the friends of the group of friends, who claimed that this move (preparation of Chinese translations to the media) was not respectful of melayu as mandarin. Status, although i also issued language and English press releases at that time the press conference also interacted in Mandarin and English and the media.
According to section 152 (1) of the federal Constitution, no person shall prohibit or prevent any person from using, teaching or learning other languages. In this constitutional spirit, what is wrong with the distribution of press releases in Chinese or other languages?
Not to mention, the press release that I issued in my capacity as secretary of finance has always been based on Chinese language, English, and occasionally on forced and important topics, and we have translated into Chinese media for Chinese media in both foreign and foreign countries to make it easier for them to do so The unit directly possesses first-hand information, may I ask: where is the logic of disrespect for Mandarin?
Our country has been independent for 61 years and few ministers provide Chinese translations to the media. Now that the ministry of finance offers a multilingual message, it is a manifestation of our multicultural face and respect for the people’s performance. Moreover, the Chinese version of the translation will help to spread out the original language through Chinese-based social media.
Moreover, we are now in the era of globalization, and the national ruf cannot move forward and continue to use ethnic extremes to gain support. Do not think that this can perpetuate the political life of the country. This will only allow the national ruf to continue to be rejected by the people after 509 general elections.
The attack from the friends of the states, we think it is for granted and can be ignored; but as one of the leaders of a new Malaysia, I am convinced that it is an advantage to understand one more language, a species of species in Malaysia Unique Advantages. No matter what ethnic Malaysian, at least understand 3 languages, it is our unique pride.
Even as a press conference of the prime minister in London, in addition to national language, they often answer questions from international media in English. This highlights the advantages of my country’s multilingualism, and it does not affect the status of melayu as the official language of our country, but it is not possible for people to come out to point out pointing points.
You know, both the prime minister and the press conference of the ministry of finance are published in Kuala Lumpur, International City. On this solemn occasion, we have always published in Mandarin, and then in English, my Chinese text is translated to the media when necessary.
In preparation for Chinese media, the ministry of finance officials have been frequently questioned by other departments, after all this has never happened. However, learning and use of Chinese / mother tongue are fundamental rights conferred and guaranteed by article 152 (1) of the federal constitution. In addition to the ministry of finance, other departments under the federal government should provide more space for use in Chinese, and officials must adapt and customary ministers to use Chinese language or other mother tongue except in Mandarin and English.
Today, despite the accusations made by racist people, I will not bow down to them, and the minister of finance’s message will continue to be published in Mandarin, English, and when necessary, it will be added to Chinese translation, and I hope that high-level government officials can get used to Mode of operation. In my view, the use of more than one language to make statements does not mean that my love for this country in Malaysia will be cut off, or affect the status of Mandarin as an official language, and conversely, this can highlight our pluralistic nature. The New Malaysia is an inclusive and mutual respect for pluralistic countries, while maintaining melayu as official language status, we also need to control the use of other languages to enhance competitiveness, so as minister of finance, I insist When necessary, the Chinese media will continue to be posted in Chinese to the Chinese media both inside and outside the

If someone thoughtfully provides a Rosetta stone of an announcement, why complain? This is to avoid mistranslation and the complications that arise because of that.
Those who object should try to translate these two examples into another language and ask someone to translate that back into English:
01 I will heel you. I will save your sole. I will even dye for you.
02 If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?
