Passenger not drunk, expected to be charged after MH179 scuffle, say cops
SHAH ALAM: The German passenger who caused a scuffle on board Flight MH179 en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, is expected to be charged with “imperilling” the safety of the aircraft and passengers.
Sepang acting OCPD Supt Abdul Aziz Ali said the 54-year-old was being remanded at the Sepang police headquarters and that police had forwarded the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) with the recommendation that the man be charged.
The businessman was travelling alone and departed KL International Airport (KLIA) at 11.27pm on Saturday and was supposed to arrive in Colombo at 12.18am local time.
…
“He (the passenger) was seated in the first class and asked for the stewardess to serve him whiskey after the flight had taken off.
“However, because the ‘fasten seatbelt sign’ was still turned on, his request was rejected.
“That was when he got mad and got into a scuffle with one of the stewardesses,” said Supt Abdul Aziz.
Crew members and passengers had to subdue the man, prompting the pilot to make an air turn back to KLIA at about 11.30pm.
…
He lives in Bali with his wife, according to Supt Abdul Aziz.

‘Not another one’: drama on flight MH179
Mid-air incident sparks fears for passengers on Malaysia Airlines flight on Sunday evening.
Twitter went into meltdown with fears of another aviation disaster on Sunday night after a Malaysia Airlines flight bound for Sri Lanka circled the Malacca Straight for two hours.
The hashtag #MH179 began trending as concerned social media users speculated the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Colombo was in trouble.
“Lets us all take a minute to pray for #MH179. Please give us a good news this time. Hope everyone is safe. Land safely,” one user wrote.
“Hoping the people on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH179 get to ground safely,” another tweet read.
After circling for several hours, the flight safely returned to Kuala Lumpur on Sunday evening, with Malaysia Airlines blaming the incident on a drunk passenger.
“The intoxicated passenger started harassing Malaysia Airlines’ crew shortly after the flight was airborne,” the airline said in a statement.
“Due to his big body size, other guests had to assist the crew to restrain the passenger.”
Air traffic tracker Flightradar24 said the plane was forced to circle for two hours to burn fuel and reduce its landing weight before returning to Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia Airlines’ flight MH179 from Kuala Lumpur to Colombo on 9 May 2015 made a turnback to KLIA due to a disruptive passenger.
The intoxicated passenger started harrassing Malaysia Airlines’ crew shortly after the flight was airborne. Due to his big body size, other guests had to assist the crew to restraint the passenger.
To ensure safety and comfort of those onboard, the commander of the flight made a decision to make a turnback. Upon arrival in KLIA, the disruptive passenger was handed over to the authority.
MH179D then departed Kuala Lumpur for Colombo on 10 May 2015 at 10:06am.

Colombo-bound MAS flight makes turn-back
A Malaysian Airlines plane headed for Colombo, Sri Lanka, made an air turn back after circling the Straits of Malacca for two hours.
According to aircraft tracking websites, Flight MH179 had flown in circles (known as a holding pattern) over the ocean west of Pulau Ketam since about 11.30pm.
“MH179 is returning to Kuala Lumpur after two hours of fuel burn to reduce landing weight,” Flightradar24 tweeted at 1.30am.
It then landed safely in KLIA 20 minutes later.
It is currently unknown what had caused the turn back.
In aviation, a holding pattern is a racetrack-shaped flight path that is flown over repeatedly by the same aircraft.
It is typically used by aircraft to maintain its location while waiting for permission to land at a congested airport.
