Cops using CCTV to zoom in on UM rally-goers

Police have started investigations to identify individuals involved in the rally at Universiti Malaya (UM) last Monday.
Brickfields police chief Muhammad Azlee Abdullah said they had begun investigations by scrutinising recordings of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras placed in several areas in the campus.
“We have also scrutinised pictures of participants uploaded on social media as well as those published in newspapers,” said Muhammad Azlee, as reported in Berita Harian.
“After identifying those involved, we will make an announcement and we will also contact those we have identified to assist with the investigations.”
UM media and corporate unit head Izzad Zalman Abd Kader said that the university is still identifying students who were involved in the gathering.
The students may be investigated under the Universities and University Colleges (Amendment) Act 2012 and the Universiti Malaya (Discipline of Student) Rules 1999, said Izzad.

Quit witch hunt over rally, UM told

Umno and DAP are again at loggerheads, this time over the rally involving 2,000 students and supporters at Universiti Malaya on Monday night.
While DAP urges UM to drop its police report on the matter and concentrate on improving its ailing rankings, Puteri Umno urges action on those who broke the lock at UM’s gate to enter the campus for the talk by PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
“UM’s administration should take an enlightened attitude to what happened on Monday, admit it had made a colossal blunder in the lockdown and power black-out of University of Malaya.
“(It should) enlist the support of university students, alumni, academicians and the Malaysian public to restore academic freedom to regain the university’s international repute for academic excellence in its early decades,” DAP’s parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang (left) said.
He said that going on a “vengeful” campaign to penalize students and academics who attended the rally will actually hurt their reputation further.

Anwar enters alma mater, delivers last speech in darkness
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim finally makes it to his alma mater, Universiti Malaya (UM), which had tried earlier to keep him from delivering his address to the student population by closing all the gates into the campus here.
The Dewan Tunku Canselor, the venue for the talk titled “Anwar Ibrahim: 40 Years from UM to Jail” and organised by the university’s student council, is closed and blanketed in darkness.
…
But the 67-year-old UM alumnus is undaunted. He climbs onto a truck that had been brought out as a backup for just such a situation, and speaks to the hundreds of students who braved the evening downpour and helped open UM’s gates for him.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — Scores of Universiti Malaya (UM) students are standing in the rain in front of their campus, the heavy metal gates closed, forbidding looking as the country’s oldest university seeks to keep out its alumnus, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from delivering a highly-anticipated speech tonight, the eve a high-profile court case.
…
The UM student council (PMUM) president Fahmi Zainol stands atop a truck parked in front of the locked gates, insisting campus security let them in.
“Bangkit! Bangkit! Bangkit Rakyat! Buka pintu! Buka pintu! Masuk UM!” he chants, and the crowd of students around him picks up the cry.
After more than two hours and their patience run out, the students charged the closed gates and pushed their way through by sheer dint of their numbers.

Once inside, Fahmi pauses for a while to speak to the throng, “I’m proud of all the students present, I am scared just like you about the disciplinary action they will take on us.”

Ahead of Anwar talk, UM sends staff home over ‘electricity issues’
As Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim prepares to give a talk at Universiti Malaya (UM) tonight, the university administration has informed staff they can leave work early today, citing electrical issues.
In an email from the administration, UM said all employees were allowed to leave work as early as 4pm.
“The bad and unpredictable weather of late has resulted in blackouts and damage to electrical substations in the university,” UM’s administration told them in an email that is now being circulated on Facebook.
“The situation is dangerous and the university would like to carry out repairs and maintenance on the electrical substations at several major locations in the university.
“Hence, to avoid any unforeseen circumstances, the administration has agreed for all offices in the campus of Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, to be closed down on October 27, 2014 (Monday) from 4pm today,” the email said.

UM’s security department has tightened security around the campus and shut many of its main gates to prevent vehicles from entering, causing traffic congestion at the Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya entrances.
Security director Yusof Harun said in an email to the university’s employees that he had received orders from the administration to allow only vehicles with the UM sticker to enter the campus.
It is believed the restriction is to prevent the UM Undergraduates’ Association (PMUM) from carrying out their programme tonight: “40 years: from UM to prison”.
However, PMUM said it would go on with the programme as planned, and Anwar was expected to speak to the students there tonight.

UM claims Anwar event bid to ‘topple government’, ropes in cops for campus watch
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — The country’s premier university has banned a campus talk by alumnus and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim scheduled for tomorrow, claiming the event organised by its student council is an illegal gathering aimed at “toppling the government”.
In a circular to its student population, the administration of Universiti Malaya (UM) said the police will also take over security watch of its main campus here from 7am tomorrow, ahead of the planned talk by Anwar, adding that all gates leading into its grounds, except for the main gate at Kuala Lumpur, will be closed to unregistered vehicles from 4pm.
“Please be informed that the programme ‘Anwar Ibrahim: 40 Years from UM to Jail’ scheduled for October 27, 2014 at UM’s Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor (DTC) is banned as the programme was not approved by the university.
“The university has also given a police warning that the talk is an illegal gathering with the purpose of toppling the government,” stated the university notice, which was emailed this evening to several news organisations and confirmed to be legit by Lee Jin Yang, deputy president of University of Malaya Student Council (PMUM).
The circular stated that the programme featuring Anwar was against the University and University Colleges Act 1971.
It further forbid UM students from being in the vicinity of Dataran DTC from 4pm tomorrow, warning that those who violated the order could be suspended from their studies or even expelled.
The notice was signed by UM’s deputy vice-chancellor in charge of student affairs, Prof Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof.

Anwar to defy ban and address students on UM campus
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will return to his alma mater, Universiti Malaya (UM) tomorrow night to speak at an event organised by students, defying a ban by university administration.
Anwar’s aide Dr Fahmi Ngah told The Malaysian Insider that the PKR de facto leader will attend the event, “40 Years: From UM to Prison”, organised by the Universiti Malaya Undergraduates Association (PMUM), despite UM vice-chancellor of student affairs Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof’s warning that the programme is illegal.
The university has threatened PMUM president Fahmi Zainol, a final year student of social administration and justice, with suspension and fine if he defies the ban.
The student event looks set to be a contentious affair if Anwar does indeed show up and is barred from entry, as a screenshot of a Whatsapp group message circulated today allegedly shows Fahmi planning to use force if the opposition leader was barred from entering the campus grounds.
…
UM’s vice-chancellor of student affairs Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof is said to have issued a letter which says:
1. The police will begin patrolling campus grounds from 7am tomorrow and from 4pm, all of its gates will be closed with the exception of the main gate along Jalan Universiti.
2. For the whole of tomorrow, police will take over security matters at UM to block outsiders
3. Students will also not be allowed to hang around Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor, where the event is scheduled to be held, or its vicinity, from 4pm onwards.

Police to lock down UM tomorrow over Anwar event
Universiti Malaya will be a police lockdown tomorrow over a student event scheduled with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which has been declared illegal. Universiti Malaya will be in a police lockdown tomorrow over a student event where Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been invited to speak, according to a letter to students purportedly written by UM’s vice-chancellor of student affairs Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof.
It said police have informed university authorities that as of 7am tomorrow, they will take over security at its campus in Kuala Lumpur.
Rohana added that police have warned against allowing the event from taking place.
UM authorities earlier declared the event, “40 years, from UM to prison”, organised by the Universiti Malaya Undergraduates Association (PMUM), as illegal.
In the letter sighted by The Malaysian Insider, Rohana said the event which was scheduled to be held at the Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor, was banned by the UM management.
“There was no approval for the event from the UM management. Police have also warned against the event being held,” she said.

UM denies cops will guard campus to bar Anwar talk
Universiti Malaya has denied that it issued a notice to students warning them against attending a talk by PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim on campus tomorrow.
It also denied that police will take over the campus security tomorrow to block the event.
“No such thing as police taking over. UM has its own security, why do we need police to come in?” vice-chancellor in charge of student affairs Rohana Yusof said.
She also denied issuing any threats of disciplinary action against students who participate in the event.
“There is no notice. UM never gave permission for the activity so we don’t expect such a thing to happen tomorrow,” she said when contacted.

Anti-Anwar UM students fear talk affects safety
A group of students are asking for police protection over worry that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Universiti Malaya (UM) will create unrest on campus.
Student group Penggerak Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya submitted a memorandum about its concerns to the police at the Pantai Police Station this afternoon, according to KiniTV.
The organisation’s chairperson Wan Mohd Suhail Wan Senu said Anwar’s scheduled pressence in UM on Monday is expected to attract “thousands of fanatical supporters”.
“We are afraid Anwar will misuse the program as a platform to incite and exploit the students to take to the streets in support of him,” said Wan Mohd Suhail.
Anwar, who has been sentenced to five years in jail for sodomy and is free on bail, is appealing the decision at the Federal Court, which will hear the case on Oct 28 and 29.
The opposition leader has accused the ruling coalition of masterminding the charge and maintained that it is politically motivated.
Wan Mohd Suhail said Anwar had previously made use of students during a reformasi movement in 1998 when he was first charged with sodomy and corruption, and did not want to see a repeat of that.
