An interracial council has been formed by Malay rights group Perkasa and two relatively unknown non-Malay NGOs and this is “proof” that Perkasa is not racist, its president Ibrahim Ali said. He also claimed that the leaders of these two NGOs ‘fell in love with him’ in 5 minutes after meeting him.

Less than 48 hours ago, three race-championing NGOs squabbled in public before the ink was even dry on their pact to work together. It must make Malaysians wonder what role civil society can play in the healing after a bruising general election. In the fifth of the series on reconciliation, The Malaysian Insider talks to non-governmental organisations.

This may sound like a joke for the pub, but it really happened. A Malay, a Chinese and an Indian group walked into a news conference to announce they would all work together. Then they fought.

In classic form, Malay rights group Perkasa’s deputy chief Zulkifli Noordin chose that occasion on Friday to defend the headmaster of SK Seri Pristana who ordered his non-Muslim pupils to eat their lunch in the school shower room, next to the toilet. Zulkifli, of course, was already famous for speaking derisively of Hindu gods before.

Angry members of the New Indian Welfare and Charity Association, which had just announced its partnership with Perkasa, confronted Zulkifli but he stood his ground. Then they all left.

What role their newfound Chinese partner, Malaysia New Era Chinese Association, played in all this remains to be told in what no doubt will become a pub joke about how three racial champions behave when they meet in Malaysia.

Not so much of a joke is how the rest of civil society here sees their lot and it is telling if the nation’s leaders say that reconciliation is top of the agenda after a bruising general election. If civil society is about citizens coming together to support the Malaysian way, then much of it clearly feels alienated from the powers.

Perkasa’s MIRAC (Malaysian InterRacial NGOs Council)

Perkasa today teamed up with Malaysia New Era Chinese Association (Percisma) and New Indian Welfare and Charity Association (Perinbam) to form a Malaysian InterRacial NGOs Council (Mirac), which it said would meet once a month to discuss inter racial issues.

Respecting each other’s religion and upholding the federal constitution were among the five points in the charter that the NGOs signed today.

The charter also promised to reject nepotism, corruption and abuse of power.

DISAGREEMENT OVER THE SHOWER ROOM CUM CANTEEN CASE (See Genuine! Facebook photos of school shower room-as-canteen..)

Earlier, Zulkifli, who is no stranger to controversy surrounding Indian issues after being recorded on video allegedly insulting Hinduism, defended the makeshift canteen being placed in a shower room at SK Seri Pristana.

“We will defend the headmaster if necessary. He has been the subject of slander from people who have politicised this episode,” he said.

Perinbam members surrounded Zulkifli shortly after members of the press left the conference room.

They demanded an explanation from him, but Zulkifli dodged their questions while appearing to maintain what he said was correct.

Perinbam members then were seen voicing their dissatisfaction with several other Perkasa members.

“We are not like MIC. We will not keep quiet,” a member was heard saying.

No harmony in Perkasa interracial council

Within minutes of signing a charter to work out interracial issues this evening, a row broke out between two of the signatories – the initiator Perkasa and the New Indian Welfare and Charity Association (Perinbam).

The row was sparked by Perkasa deputy president Zulkifli Noordin’s statement during the press conference to announce the interracial council, during which he defended the actions of SK Seri Pristana school headmaster Mohamad Nasir Mohd Nor.

Unhappy perinbam members about to leave in perkasa 2Perinbam members quickly took issue with Zulkifli’s statement. They surrounded him after the press conference ended and demanded an explanation.

Zulkifli defended his position and left the event, with unhappy Perinbam members leaving soon after.

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali then had to coerce Perinbam president U Thamotharan to stay back for Perkasa’s buka puasa event, after the press conference.

Ibrahim was heard saying “sorry” to Thamotharan, though Malaysiakini were stopped by Perkasa members from coming near the conversation.

“There’s nothing, these are two friends talking,” a Perkasa member said.
